Learning that Jeremy suffered from mental health issues in his later life gave me newfound respect for the amazing performance he consistently gave as Holmes. I've always been a fan of the books and his acting brings humanity, realism and beautiful drama to a complicated role. I see no darkness in his performance, actually light and hope. Anyone who has suffered from mental health problems will understand, nothing but respect for Jeremy

I unfortunately (for my age) discovered JB too late. I have only just finished the Grenada TV series. I used to claim that Basil Rathbone was the foremost Sherlock Holmes but I have to take my hat off to JB. He just dwells inside the character and gives him life that I have never seen before. The mannerisms, the mercurial moodiness, the isolative and often major depressive that was Holmes was portrayed expertly. JB really deserves a BAFTA for his portrayal

Jeremy Brett is a very sexy and funny Holmes. His laugh and cheekiness is infectuous and endearing. You can tell by the later seasons that his health is in decline, he does wheeze quite a bit in the later episodes and is less energetic and becomes more unsettling. I will admit that I came to the Granada Holmes rather late and have quite a crush on him. I'm not sorry though. :) It's sad we lost him so early. He was a truly great actor and from what I've seen in interviews an incredibly kind person.

In my watching of Brett's Sherlock he didn't just bring "darkness" to the character. I've never seen a Sherlock that was as emotive and human as Brett's. @@Dan-jp8jr no worries. I read all the ACD Sherlock stories before I ever watched the character on screen so I had a definite image (opinions) of his features and character in my mind. However, I did enjoy cumberbatch's modern interpretation quite a lot in the first few seasons (the modern setting was a fresh take on it I hadn't seen before). Altho, I think the later seasons ran away from reality? The plot? Something just didn't feel connected to the spirit of Sherlock for me. (I've noticed once a Sherlock show uses up the original stories for plot they try to get creative and things usually get weird. Even Brett was in a pretty wacky episode that felt like a fever dream) I'd still say my favorite on screen Sherlock I've seen is Jeremy Brett. But I haven't seen them all so maybe that'll change!

Jeremy Brett is the quintessential Sherlock Holmes. I’ve watched Cumberbatch and Rathbone’s portrayals and enjoyed them while I did but Jeremy’s is the only one I’ve come back to watch again. There is scholarship that suggests Conan Doyle’s Holmes was bipolar and I believe Brett recognized it himself and fully melded with the character. Accounts say it was mesmerizing and frightening how Brett fully inhabited Holmes and Brett was fully aware of it too as it was happening. He was a consummate actor with an intensity who took his own struggles with bipolar disorder and interpreted it brilliantly and passionately and empathetically through Holmes.

Let's just admit it: watching Jeremy Brett as Holmes is pure f-ing poetry. His facial expressions, his diction, his mannerisms as Holmes, there's simply no comparison and Brett 100% nailed it. There's simply no one better, and Benedict's lame commentary about how Brett's 'manic depression' towards the end of the series was "toxic" reeks of an actor who's 1. Jealous 2. Rather pissed off he had to play second fiddle to the greatest actor who established and DEFINED the role. RIP Jeremy Brett, you were a true master of your craft.

Jeremy Brett actually was Bipolar (manic depressive), and it's very well known Brett imbued that in his performance (from how he's described in A Study in Scarlet, Holmes could easily be seen an undiagnosed manic depressive). Benedict's not 'jealous' at playing 'second fiddle' to Brett. He's simply stating what Brett did with his interpretation and how he doesn't just wanna retread him or Rathbone.

@@coreyrider8056 Exactly. I've never seen anything but respect from Cumberbatch for Jeremy Brett. I didn't ever hear before he was a family friend so Cumberbatch personally knew him. Brett explored the "darker" mental health issues that Holmes had in his stage play. He's spoken on it in interviews and I remember reading an interview in TV Guide with him where he also discussed his and Holmes' MH issues. I have to wonder now after almost 45 years reading/watching Holmes if he wasn't somewhere on the Spectrum. Brett is the definitive Holmes and always will be.

Benedict also said of Jeremy: ‘those slightly mad eyes which became sadly a lot madder’. That comment plus this video shows, in my opinion, ignorance. Jeremy tried hard to raise awareness about bipolar disorder, to hear Benedict talk about it in such a way is awful. (He said Jeremy’s Sherlock had a ‘cold disconnect’ too, which I don’t believe to be accurate either. If Jeremy’s Sherlock is ‘cold’, I dread to think what that would make Benedict’s. And saying here that Jeremy brought a ‘massive amount of darkness’ to the role... I feel like I watched a completely different show to him)

I absolutely agree with you Wirral, that is a disgraceful thing to say.Jeremy Brett surpassed Cumberbatch as an actor in every aspect.Holmes' character was beautifully portrayed by him.I grew up watching both Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone, and in my opinion they both portrayed Sherlock Holmes with more attention to detail and Holmes's nature rather than Cumberbatch.Despite being manic depressive JB,as a method actor worked harder his portrayal was much truer to the character in the book.He was portraying the actual Sherlock Holmes,a gentleman in Victorian society.Cumberbatch's is a modern portrayal, and I didn't like the "happy -go -lucky- lads -on-the-job" portrayal that Cumberbatch is talking about,I personally think it took away from Sherlock Holmes' character...he's implying that he's done a better job than Brett, and blaming it on the fact that JB was manic depressive. It isn't true.It was because he was battling manic depression that his portrayal had such keen impressive quality to it...No other man could or would portrayed such a character in such a seamless manner. It is rather painful for me to say that...I,as a fan,am actually pained that he had to go through so much to portray Holmes, and simultaneously struck by the fact that his illness helped portray the character so vividly. No actor has ever impressed me the way JB did,up to to this day.Actually Mr Cumberbatch....you could definitely learn more from JB's acting and his methods, you still have a long way to go.

Along with manic depression (a.k.a. bipolar disorder) usually goes genius. My late husband suffered greatly with this terrible mental illness, yet for many many years, he did wonderful things with his life. He was very talented. Jeremy Brett was brilliant. However, I think it's rather cruel of some commentators here to resort to hurling insults at Benedict. But then I saw Vasily Livanov, and despite my initial skepticism (a RUSSIAN interpreting such a quintessentially English character?) I had to confess that in my opinion Livanov is the greatest of them all. I think it was that on-the-edge aspect of Brett's interpretation that eventually came to weigh down the character. Livanov plays Holmes as very comfortable in his skin, not tormented and neurotic. His Holmes is a gentleman, basically at ease among all classes of society, women included. He's also quite a bit more light-hearted than Brett; it's a bit of a shock to hear him laugh out loud after he's played a prank on Watson.

Sheer ignorance on Cumberpatch's part. Towards the end of his life, months after shooting the final episode of Sherlock Holmes, Brett suffered from many things however to imply that his Manic Depression somehow _overtook_ Brett's performance is ludicrous. Each actor of Holmes brought something unique to the roll. Rathbone, humor. Brett, a seriousness and vitality unfamiliar with the time and social class the character was in. Cumberpatch characterizes Holmes as a stubborn, egotistical bag of douche who should have _no_ friends and is entirely uninteresting after the pilot episode.

Yes Brett was the best actor for the part, it was also though the best overall production yet done and by far the most faithful to Doyles stories. Fans of the books had been asking for a really good reproduction of these tales forever, and with the Granada series they got way more than they'd hoped for. It's one of the all time best series on telly though the earlier period is obviously the best. Benedict has made a very good original take on Holmes. He is fun to watch and Martin Freeman is a very good Watson. There was no need to redo the great Granada series, that thankfully is on record. I hope Cumberbatch's big bucks forays into the comic cartoon movies doesn't cause him to ignore doing some more seasons as Holmes. It's a great production.

I don't understand the appeal of this actor. He looks like a 30 year old who somehow managed to bypass puberty. His comments about Jeremy Brett are perfunctory, shallow and unfelt. Blather that takes pains not to alienate Holmes fans who are potential viewers of his own series. From the brief snatches I've seen of his series, he seems to be copying Jeremy Brett to a certain degree.

✨✨✨🧐🔎The most believable and realistic Sherlock (as directed by Arthur Conan Doyle) and also the most intriguing to play with is Jeremy Brett and I don't think it will ever be surpassed. At least for me. The good thing about the NEW - Sherlock = Cumberbatch is that it plays in a completely different world and time and the connecting points to the originals are served so sympathetically that it is difficult to relate these two Sherlock actors and the series to each other to compare. Today I can say that I love both and generally have a stomach ache before the *FromOldMakeNew - or - FromMovieMakeSerial* etc. But it can work absolutely great like here (I felt the same way with *Hannibal*, for example, and was then more than positively surprised) But if I was only allowed to choose one of the Sherlocks including their series, I'm so sorry for my darling Benedict🤔🥹 ...then it would always be!!!!! ***Jeremy Brett***🔍🧐❤️‍🔥 ✨✨✨ (Sorry for my bad English, i am from Germamy 🇬🇧🇩🇪☺️☺️☺️)

Jeremy Brett simply had class, intelligence and brought his best to the character. He was the best Sherlock, the best! Cumberbatch is entertaining and has a good voice but no comparison. I don't care for his comments on Jeremy Brett's mental health - he is not qualified and it is in poor taste and lacks class as an actor.

Cumberbatch comes off as a phony, stuck up, bastid. Jeremy was "a friend"? Not bloody likely. Jeremy Brett connected to every actor he played with. One can see that. Cumberbatch does not. He is a self involved, stuck up , little beeyotch.

Two superlative Holmes, guys! I think he brings up being a family friend to emphasize his comments are not made as an outsider but rather from someone with an insiders perspective. I suppose actors prepared for it, but myself I cannot imagine how i could deal with the thoughts of taking on a role that had already been so definitely mastered and owned? If there is a variation on the character or story I can understand, or it is being approached a different way, however a straight retelling, done not that long after J.B.'s absolute possession of the character & due recognition? It must be slightly easier doing s.h., like playing another Doctor or Bond, but it's still not quite the same. Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions on this?
