I think Elizabeth's explanation as to why British actors can do American accents better than American actors can do British accents is spot on.
@mollytovxx41812 жыл бұрын
It also is a good explanation as to why Australian actors are good at both British and American accents while Australian accents are often butchered by Brits and Americans. Australia imports a lot of media from both places, while it's way less common for Australian media to be exported.

so true. I've been living in the US since last Summer, have never been here before but so many people have told me that I sound really American and I guess that's also due to the fact that I spend my entire teenage years just consuming so much American media. Changing from a less wrinkly material/design to a more solid/smooth surface really brought out the design more and kind of elevated it from a costume or robes to more of a super hero suit in a sense. He might as well have pushed the glass down for Tom Holland and people would've understood. 🤭 When they asked about cricket versus baseball, the Indian in me wanted both to choose Cricket and was surprised that both chose the opposite, but was very glad that Cumberbatch misunderstood. 😋 This was a very fun interaction and a very fun activity. Really, one of the most amazing things about the MCU is that they've cast DOZENS of actors as these characters over the last 15 years and they ALL seem to get along and genuinely enjoy each others' company. Can't recall ANY stories of actor friction from the MCU like with The Fast & The Furious movies. That's pretty spectacular when you think about it.

She is spot on on the accents! Australians get american and brittish content on their tv's all the time. The opposite happens way less. It's hard to imitate something that you've rarely heard. On a side note, when English isn't the first language, exposure plays a great part as well. It's also why some people from some countries have such a thick accent when they speak English and others don't. It all depends if you grew up listing to the actor's voices or dubbed voice-overs. In Europe it's quite easy to spot certain nationalities in a room where everyone is speaking English. And it's always the ones who grew up with movies dubbed over. The others who grew up with subtitles speak English with a sort of "international" flavour to it.
@DanniBerry2 жыл бұрын
I would say that's definitely part of it, though interestingly I had an effective speech teacher tell me once that Australian accents are hard for others to do because we use less of our mouth muscle than English or American and it's difficult to shut the muscle down as opposed to learning to use them more...
@anneofgreengables90962 жыл бұрын

@nsh17722 жыл бұрын
@@twincesseszeigler4366 It is subjective but the more you understand cricket, the more you start to enjoy it. ( It's common for every sport but cricket just hits different ) For starters, it is one of the most difficult sports to play. To play cricket, you need physical fitness, stamina, endurance, mental strength and mental toughness, teamwork, leadership, discipline etc... All needed in a player to perform decently in the sport. As Benedict said, a Test Match, which is the longest format of the game, goes on for 5 days, so it takes a massive toll on a player physically and mentally. In Test cricket, players look to stay in as long as possible and score as much runs as they can. When someone doesn't understand cricket watch Test matches, they will get bored easily, because for a non-cricket lover, it seems like not much is happening in the game. But for someone who understands the match, and what goals each team is trying to achieve during the day, it is the most fascinating thing to witness. The small battles between players ( from skill of course, not from fists ) the banter, verbal exchanges, the crowd backing up their respectful team, the celebrations of players when they achieve small goals, these are all eyegasm for test cricket lovers. Also, it one of the few sports where conditions are very important, because the weather and the humidity hugely affects the pitch, the ball condition, how quickly the ball travels in the ground, etc... Another thing is, and I think that this is the most important, it is known as the "Gentleman's Game". It is a non-contact sport, and players are expected to be respectful and disciplined. This is my opinion, so it is absolutely okay if you disagree.

6:30 As an Australian, I was shocked by how Lizzie nailed this? Growing up here, the content on TV was a mix of American, British and Aussie - cinema probably about the same too. We absorbed more of the culture from those places on TV for a while, and there were also more options to watch content from many other countries too because of the diverse audience. Plus if you want to act as an Aussie, you probably have British and American options to audition for 🤷♀️ I’ve always thought the content consumption was a factor for Aussie actors, and also Aussies in general for understanding other accents. The idea that saying ‘water’ with anything other than an “American” accent (for whichever location you’re in) in America and being met with confusion is bizarre to me.

My theory as to why Australians can do both accents is: 1: In support of what Elizabeth said --Australians do watch a lot of both American and British TV shows, so we pick up both accents very well (without even trying I can slip into either British or American accents just by listening to someone speaking with either accents in person, sometimes even when no one is present. I had one British lady ask me where from England I was from because I had an accent, and my best friend who is American said I sounded American, lastly at work I am often called out for having a British accent for no reason). 2: Australians have an amalgamation of accents, and while most can identify an Australian accent it is unique because of how much we've been influenced by other cultures (we have a very strong Greek and Italian migrant population for example) and because of this blend, we don't have a definitive accent but a generalization of multiple. 3: We're just that good :P
@scottb30342 жыл бұрын
that's only partially accurate. Australians can probably only do "General American" convincingly which is the accent taught to actors and utilized almost exclusively on media. American accents across the country vary immensely. Same can be said of British Isles accents (liverpool is different from the myriad of London accents). But it is accurate to suggest that since you have media readily available that Australians are better at slipping into a specific American and British accent than those peoples can.

You have no idea how much I enjoyed watching Benedict realize his mistake and move his glass to strongly disagree when it came to the cricket-baseball question after which he continued to explain how there's a fast and slow game, and test cricket, until the two finally came to an understanding.
