Coffee and cake is very common throughout Britain I’m not sure why James and Benedict are acting like its not. Most cafes especially in parks and rural areas where people go for walks have a selection of freshly baked cakes on display and people go in to have coffee and a slice of cake.

You get slightly wet but it won't go through your coat in a few minutes that you might be out in it so why bother carrying an umbrella around all day? You soon dry out once you're inside. There's also the point that most people don't carry umbrellas around because the rain is unpredictable. Unlike a lot of the world it can rain here on any day of the year, we don't have dry summer and wet winters, we have slightly drier summers and slightly wetter winters, but it's damp all year round. So you don't carry an umbrella around with you because it might rain, but it might not, and people see that the inconvenience of carrying it outweighs the possibility of getting a bit wet. If you come from somewhere which has different weather, and rain is either heavy or non-existent, and you know when it will happen, then this may surprise you, but it's just something to get used to if you live in the UK

But in the UK its very common to go into a cafe and see whole cakes on display and you get a slice of it with your coffee. Coffee and cake is very common throughout the whole of the UK not just Richmond. Its most common in places where people go for walks or cycle rather than in busy cities.
