@funkafize The setup you're describing would be fantastic. And yes, we have stacked the KW181's one on top of the other. They sound great, and arguably a little better than even placed side by side. Thanks for watching.

You’re only speaking about spl in decibels in this video. Adding a second woofer will increase clarity at the same Db with one sub. Total potential output is there yes. But actual bass clarity and quality is increased as well. 🤘🏻

Love your videos. You are one of the few people that knows what he is talking about. I couple my QSC K Subs together and they sound great.

Another point that might help viewers is that coupling them reduces bass fingers created from splitting subs. Bass power alleys occur from destructive interference and if two sub cabinets are between roughly 10 and 35 feet apart (assuming a large room/outside) then they will create destructive interference throughout the listening area which sounds absolutely awful. I'm pretty sure you're aware of this but just wanted to let up and coming DJ's know that using sticks and separating subs (unless the room is small and the subs end up near the wall) can cause serious issues. Thanks for the video.

Good info. I've found that to be a problem. I have the same speakers. When I set the pair of kw181s apart and pole mount the tops, the bass swells at 100hz right in between at my DJ table. It gives me the worst migraine and causes my mic to feedback. You would think that the bass would be extremely loud on the dance floor but it is nonexistent. The bass seems to cancel itself out. The only way that I have found to eliminate that is to put the subs together in the middle and use the tops on speaker stands on the outside. I wish it worked the other way for aesthetics but it doesn't. How do you feel about stacking the 2 KW181 subs on top of eachother on one side only?
@Reticuli5 жыл бұрын
@@DjGrooveTech That has more to do with the subs being away from the walls than the subs being apart from each other.

Don't want to tear anyone apart lol but technically when coupling base cabinets, especially high end single driver cabinets, you want the horns/air ducts together and drivers on the ends creating basically one base cabinet, where as you have them sitting identically next to each other, but with consumer cabs not a big deal.. good vid.

what about 3 or 4 subs? do i put them all together and is there still a +3db gain per sub added?
@gman76utube12 жыл бұрын
I think poster 'numberexhaust' got it right mentioning constructive interference is at work, or coupling. This is taught in physics classes, whether it's sound waves or optics, same principle. Remember floors and walls can either be your friend or foe, depends on how u position the subs (wavelengths and wall spacings come to mind).

@rileyswanson Both options are worth a try. It always comes down to acoustics of the room. Set it up a couple of different ways and determine what works best.

Wow you really know your stuff! I just bought two k 12's and one k sub. Your videos are very helpful and informative. Your the reason why I bought qsc speakers. Thank you very much
@marshalltito6 жыл бұрын
It’s correct that when you have two of the same subs running together you get a 6db increase in output but the explanation in this video for why that occurs is not correct. Doubling the power will give a 3db increase in output, doubling the radiating surface will give another 3db increase in output. Adding the second sub doubles the power and radiating surface which results in a 6db increase in output. The benefit of placing the subs together is that that you’ll minimize the negative effects of the subs creating bass nodes due to phasing issues. Also look into wave propagation in rooms to get a better understanding of how the floors, walls and ceilings effect how waves interact with their own reflections and other speakers in the same space

some clarification , additional info. ( check it if you want, its all accurate ) doubling power does add 3db... agreed. but doubling surface area will also add 3db, even with same power. so adding a second sub is 6 db. no less no more ( double surface area and double power )... i also agree 10db, is perceived double volume, also to note along those lines 1 db is the least that the ear can detect. volume controls are always different but it seams that most amps, and such work in 3 db increments, so up a notch is 3db. so adding a second sub is like adding 2 notches to your system volume... also i always like to add this nore when looking at a gain control.. the 0db. i don't know why they even add positive db to the gain control. typicvally the 0db is at the 12 oclock position. and that's as far as it should ever be. for smaller events , lower may be in order but going higher is a recipe for clipping, which can be present even if you can not hear it, and clipping can damage s a driver by exposing it to excess heat. ultimately could cause a thermal failure of the driver.
@garbagemanify5 жыл бұрын
I agree... It should be looked at from the aspect of how much the signal is ATTENUATED from 100%, not re-amplifying it.. Adding pre / amps in the signal is just one more ( or 1,246 ) thing to not want in the signal's path.. hempopotamusloudspeakers.com

@noodlecake71240 This also assumes you have no other signal processing in the chain that will help you get a mono sub out. Mono sub out is not a requirement, just to be clear...but it IS the truest sonic representation you want to have to take advantage of coupling effects. Otherwise you are sending arguably different signals to separate subs. Hope that all makes sense.

@jamesprofulla The Amp-to-Speaker cable is a powered, speaker-level signal. That can't be wireless. The only possible solution is to send a wireless signal from a mixing board to your amplifier, but the amp would need to be located remotely next to the speakers.

@funkafize13 жыл бұрын
How about stacking the KW181's? I notice the subs have indents to fit the feet pattern, allowing more stable stacking. Will you still get the 3-6dB coupling advantage when vertical stacking? Was looking at ground stacking (per side) Two KW181's with One KW153 on top. Strapped down of course. A single KW181 with a KW153 is too far below ear height at the compression driver level.

@directsound This would probably be venue-dependent. We've run 4 Mackie SWA1801's all together in a school gymnasium just like you're describing, with the mains on tripods on the outside. It was too much. By comparison, we've also run 2 subs on each side. Much better sound for that size of a room. Most of us aren't scientists, so the best thing is always to allow yourself plenty of time to set it up a couple of different ways until you're happy with the results.

I am in the market for a pair of subs to couple with my Yamaha C115V's. The QSC's sound to be exactly what I need. I am a sound quality guy and the size of these subs seem to be perfect. Thankfully I watched another one of your videos that compared them with the PRX618S-XLF's when it was mentioned that the QSC's don't have a crossover built in. They assume you are buying the matching set of tops that have the crossovers. That is frustrating. Thanks for the info though. I have subscribed.

When hooking up 2 or more subs, what should be done for wiring? Is it better to use a XLR cable that splits into 2? or is it better to daisy chain the subs by hooking one up and then using the out from that sub and hooking into the second?

Thank you for this helpful video! However, i have a question. What is the best settings if i daisy chain the 2 KW181 subwoofers to each other? Thank you!

@kidbanga1014 жыл бұрын

@agiprodj12 жыл бұрын
@noodlecake71240 The best theoretical way to do this would be to run your L & R cables into one sub, then daisy chain out to the sub next to it, then run L & R from that sub across the floor to the other side's sub. Then daisy chain from that to the one next to it. Then go out to the closer top from the last sub (either L or R depending on the side) and out to the opposite end of the floor for the last top. This gives you summed mono for the subs, and L & R for the tops. Whew!

@agiprodj13 жыл бұрын
@Techspert the challenging thing about sound reinforcement is that it is absolutely impossible for one person to predict another person's sound system performance in theory or in opinion without knowing the application. We've personally stacked the KW181's and done A/B comparisons at the events we do to find the stacked combination very good. But it's setup-specific and venue-specific. Concerts, theaters, and home audio setups have always stacked subs. If in doubt, try it out.

@bensmith11954 жыл бұрын
Kinda a late reply, but you gain 3db for every time you double the power. So from one sub to two subs, you gain 3db as you double the power. In order to get another 3db you need to double the power again, so you need to go from 2 subs to 4 subs
