Unfortunately Ben Felix is not particularly bright, and hence he doesn't understand such nuance - he just assumes everyone buys and never sells until retirement or death. Which is the vast majority. If you're somehow a super genius investor and can pick out the best-performing stocks consistently and win out 100% of the time well that's good for you, but that's extremely rare and next to impossible. No one knows how long the ARK* funds will outperform. They could go on to outperform for the next few years or they could suffer from large drawdowns (or even worse, they could fold). So far they've outperformed the SPY 6 out of 7 years. However, since many asset types are connected, I would be surprised to see ARK* fall in isolation. That is, if there was a 60-70% drawdown in ARK*, you'd most likely see a very substantial drawdown in your 3-fund portfolio, or especially in your 100% SPY portfolio. We've already seen this played out: Look at the charts for how ARKK has performed since around 2/15/2021. ARKK was up 20%+ this year, and now they're only up 4.7% vs the SPY's 1.7%.

Nice video. One correction: Top performing decile funds, over a three year period, underperforming the next year, has been a historical fact However, this is not what statisticans refer to as reverting to the mean. An example of reverting to the mean would be a coin coming up heads for ten flips and over the next million flips coming up 50/50. Over the first ten flips heads came up one hundred percent of the time, over the entire one million and ten flip sample, heads came very close to coming up fifty percent of the time. ___ There are many thousands of hedge funds and the best performer in any year has a much higher than average chance of having taken on much higher risk than the group. This often does not bode well for their future. Another factor in play is that a skilled manager with a small pool of capital will often be able to better deploy the capital into larger edge situations than once he has grown into a larger fund (usually from a burst of good looking performance). Legendary market crushing fund (for over 20 years) Medallion fund from Renaissance Technologies caps their fund at ten billion because they can not find enough special situations to justify a larger size.

I think the lesson here is pretty clear. Ambulance chasing in the world of investing is a recipe for losing money in spades. By the time you’re hearing about the next great stock, fund, fund manager, etc. it’s already too late and jumping in is almost guaranteed to lose you money.

After all this time with with Ben felix I still struggle about when to go for Small-Cap or As broad-as-possible etf's. My horizon is 30 years to be able to retire 5 years earlier. Any notes on that? Thanks

Cathie Wood also invests in a lot of small cap growth stocks where ARKK can buy up enough shares to influence its market price which pumps it up when ARK buys them. This causes new investors to think she’s choosing stocks with great returns. They then buy her fund which increases her inflows and increases her funds stock price. She’s also a master marketer. She’s even a patreon member of at least 1 KZbinr. Not saying she’s bad at what she does but she isn’t a God

Ben, could you highlight what are the implications of this with an index fund or would this be shielded as it is more algorithm/predetermined weight for the companies invested? Also, how does an index fund that tracks small cap value benefit mechanically? Like, if you are investing in these companies when they are low and they eventually rise, how do you know that your fund's prospectus isn't going to liquidate that position right when it is taking off? I hope this makes sense. Basically, how are you benefitting by holding long in small cap value? Would it be paying a dividend or how would the appreciation be captured/not liquidated. Excuse my ignorance.

Thanks for the video. Why does increasing scale/size make it harder to beat benchmarks? I saw a video a few weeks ago saying the same thing, but I still don’t quite understand.
@BenFelixCSI2 жыл бұрын
Active management works by holding a subset of the market that will (hopefully) outperform. That subset of the market is by definition smaller than the market. The more capital an active strategy attracts, the larger the subset needs to be. At some point, the active fund converges on the index.

how do you feel about sticking with Index Funds, preferably Vanguard's VTSAX, VBTLX, and maybe 5% into Vanguard's Total International Stock Market Index Fund, VITAX, I think is the Ticker? Take 110-age=stock percentage of portfolio, balance to bonds

Well, interesting video. But small-cap companies are much more vulnerable to special economic condition (such as Covid). If you look back 5 years 2015-2020. Small cap ETFs under COVID tanked even under their price in 2015. On the other hand, I agree with you that going for super star ETF such as ARKK is also dangerous (due to the concentration of stocks in innovation companies). I am happy to stick to the middle Nasdaq 100 (QQQ)
