Hello thanks for the video! Just wondering why we don’t need to specify lintels for openings on internal walls? And also should bracing be needed on all external walls? I have seen some plans where they specify bracing on certain walls but not all external walls. Thank you!
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marvin, You should specify lintels for internal walls if they are load bearing. The amount of bracing depends on the wind loads and area of elevation. Ideally, you should start placing them at corners on external walls, but it's not always possible due to the architecture. Have a look at one of my Cabin design videos to understand better.

Typically what depth below grade do you place these waffle slab foundations over in Australia? Is this common over there? Also seems very costly to build this type of foundation.
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus 2 жыл бұрын
In many cases you can place them at ground level. This is what makes them cheap, it doesn't require much excavation. The beams are usually 400, but it varies with the soil reactivity.
@jamescoughlin234
@jamescoughlin234 2 жыл бұрын
Hi guys, my question is how are waffle/raft slabs designed when supported on concrete piers? Does the pier take the total weight of the slab and imposed load? If so do you need to found them into high kpa soil or can you rely on the slab in bearing as well and not only on the piers. Thanks in advance
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus 2 жыл бұрын
Hi James, I usually design the beams to span between piers or screw piles. You would use piers if you cannot achieve adequate bearing capacity at shallow depths, therefore the piers/piles will have to go as deep as you need to reach the required kPa. You could argue that the beams are still bearing on some soil and use that to reduce the loads, however most of the times I don't rely on that. You also don't know where the soft spots are and by designing the beam to span between piers you would cover this problem. Hope that clarifies
