It is very refreshing to watch this performance, as it is rarity now days to see talented young Eritreans in any industry whether it be academically or in Opera. The main reason being is the regime in Eritrea would rather drive the youth to flee the country due to indefinite military service rather than allowing them the freedom to fulfil their dreams and flourish. When I use to live in Eritrea my dream was to graduate from university and help build my country but what was awaiting me was a lifetime of National service instead and like many before and after me I fled the country and managed to immigrate to the US. I was very lucky to have got a scholarship from UCLA and graduated 4 years ago and now working in my field. Eritrea has lost many young and highly intelligent individuals who see no future for themselves in Eritrea beside a lifetime of military service. I'm pretty sure Benhur will also immigrate abroad as there are very little opportunities in Eritrea. Over the last 30 years the Eritrean regime effectively killed not just the moral of the youth but also the culture and family values. There is no single Eritrean family back in home where a child / brother / sister / mother / father is missing from the household due to the fact the individual(s) have fled abroad. Families have been torn apart due to the regimes repressive policy!! They (the regime) have destroyed the sense of togetherness which is what family is for! Also the regime destroyed the culture because people can not freely worship their religion or freely express themselves. The people back home live under constant fear and terror!! I pray one day change will come! Amen!! Then I will return to visit my family whom I'vent seen for 8 years :(
