My parents took me and my two sisters on holiday to Benidorm in 1956. We drove by car all the way through France and then down the coast of Spain, through Vilajoyosa and Castellon de la Plana, where we saw beggars on the steps of the Cathedral. Very few cars, hardly any tourists. Fishermen mending their nets on the beach. Early morning stillness and ravishing beauty. The smells and tastes of a world that has been buried under the gluttony of the tourist trade. We stayed in a hotel on the beach-front, maybe called Natalia; I looked for it in this little film, maybe saw it, not sure though. I would give up all I have to be able to go back to those days, to sit on that beach again as a five-year-old boy, looking at a precious and beautiful world that is simply no longer in existence.

Like an important I would say comment addition to this material, I've noticed that the footage also includes other locations besides Benidorm. You can see the castle from Guadalest at min. 5:00 then there is a footage shot in Alicante (see the Alicante's harbor and the "Esplanada" at min. 5:39 and also their castle on that mountain top at min. 5:55), and afterwards there is a footage from Calpe (see the surroundings and the Ifach Penon starting from the min. 6:47), and possible Altea. Thanks for showing these rare images. Good job!

This is awesome footage, but after 5 minutes or so, it's no longer Benidorm, but other towns in the area. For instance, I don't think Benidorm ever had a city tram service (not conting the intercity tram to Altea and Alicante), so I think that footage is from Alicante. And then there's Guadalest, Elche and Calpe, at least. I'll continue wathcing now... :D

I was not even born? 1953. I'm still living life to the full in Benny when ever I can go up there.....been up to Guadalest a few times and know the washing area. It seems surreal to see these images.

Nada que ver con hoy en día, me he ido a Benidorm hace unos años, bueno, tiene todavía cosas bonitas, pero muy distinto, es cierto.

Interesante material, en esos años las sierras estaban más secas y desforestadas que ahora. Al parecer el bullicio de la gente y las construcciones masivas, el aumento de densidad de población, que es estar todos en el mismo lugar, es lo que realmente es causa del "cambio climático", ahora mismo en esas zonas veo más vegetación y las laderas de esas montañas están más llenas de pinos, lo que se debería hacer es plantar árboles en las ciudades, esta bien que los políticos dejen construir cientos de rascacielos pero al menos tener la dignidad de crear zonas verdes en la misma proporción. Los políticos ya sabemos que no valen nada, pero si la gente toma iniciativa propia en plantar árboles en las zonas colindantes a la ciudad sería de gran utilidad. Las grandes ciudades aumentan la temperatura considerablemente, la única manera de regularlo es creando zonas verdes y Benidorm lo necesita

The saddest thing is the genocide that came soon after. Benidorm and nearby towns were devastated by immigration and mass tourism. he people shown in this video were probably the native Valencians who had lived there for centuries and who still constituted the majority of the population of the entire Valencian coastline in the 1950s. They were heavily minoritized a few years later. Now they are almost impossible to find in cities like Benidorm, and their language and culture are almost gone. Benidorm is nothing more than a theme park that has lost its roots and identity.

3:06 funfair with helter-skelter advertising poster 31 October? Hostels and small hotels from 1920's and integrated into the local economy of fishing and market gardens. Plenty of locals and even drinking water delivery by donkey cart with your own amphora jar? Can't believe a household got through 10 litres of wine a day?
