People overlook the total genius of Britten's arrangements. We will never see the like again.

Britten's intuitive accompaniment plus Peter Pears's wonderful voice combine to make this the definitive interpretation. Genius.

A sublime version of this is sung by Julius Drake accompanied by Gerald Finley on Hyperion CDA67778. I first heard it as I was driving to work nearly ten years go and had to pull over to listen to it.

Dreadful vocal technique. Terrible, tight, nasal sound. Completely wrong. Singers would not model themselves on this dreadful example of vocal technique. Pears was one of the worst tenors of all time. Listen to Caruso.

Britten was such a great pianist.Pears alas hasn't aged well and his style of singing sounds hopelessly dated, unnatural and affected. It would be nice to hear a proper singer sing these charming songs.
