It's so interesting to hear some of the "imperfections" in the isolated vocals like the "uh" or the unstable clean vocals behind the screams. I always end up redoing takes thinking, "How do you get that absolutely perfect like these big time vocalists?"

Also, I would love a voice breakdown in Give Me A Sign vocals., there's a lot of interesting things happening in the bridge after the second chorus with that falsetto in the background, and also in the end, where the "give me a sign" line is presented in very different ways. A video about that song would be super nice!

I've listened to this song nigh upon a thousand times, and never did I realize just how staccato the "WHAT HAVE I BE COME" line is. In the full mix, it just sounds like each syllable flows into the next one. But in this, you can hear him deliberately have that 16th note rest between each syllable. Super interesting.

Hey Chris, how do you figure out the levels for each of the vocal tracks that you add and how much they need to be panned? I struggle with layering because many times I feel like when I hear my layered vocals with the instrumental I can make out that they are many overlapping tracks, and it's not subtle enough like actual songs.
@chrisliepe4 жыл бұрын
I just guess... and then if I like it, I leave it alone. If I don’t, I kinda fumble around til I like what I hear. Haha. I wish it was more complicated for me or that I had some method, but I don’t :). It’s basically just reactionary listening.

So the key to good *production* vocals is doubling. You still have to be good at singing, but the common thread between most rock songs are doubled vocals.
@chrisliepe4 жыл бұрын
Ya a bit part of what we hear is due to vocal production. Doubling, placement, effects, overall arranging... HUGE.
