People dating someone of a different ethnicity or culture must take the responsibility to educate themselves about their partners culture and beliefs instead of buying into misinformed stereotypes. Ask questions respectfully with the intention to learn. The concept of dowry is often misunderstood and watered down to an exchange of money when it is actually a tradition that unifies the families of the couple entering into a marriage.

I understand what you’re trying to say and I respect all cultures but as an African woman who is in the interracial marriage too I think it’s time as Africans that we re-visit the concept of this tradition called bride price and be honest with each other that it’s not what it was before , like everything else we need to move with times and this dowry/bride price is outdated and so oppressive to women and also have bad consequences for our African people, no matter which way we want to look at it it is simple buying off a person/ girl from her parents that means you were their property and now you are going to be someone’s else property which in this day and age should not be happening! I would like to have an open debate with all our sisters and brothers over this not disrespecting the tradition in anyway way but just enlightening each other.

I agree that some families do not practice bride price in a way that fosters unity between in-laws but on the other side of the coin there are families who practice it in such a way that it does unite the families. It's all about intentions and good practice. Families must decide for themselves what this means in their context.

It’s about us African women who always bore the brunt of these cultures that favour male dominance in any part of our lives! the westerners careless abt what we practise infact they oblige to go and pay this bride price to please their future spouses although it doesn’t sit well with them at all so let’s leave the Westerners and just do introspection ourselves in this so called family uniting practices and I’m sure there are many other ways we could embrace our cultures without making other party feel like a possession that has to be negotiated over to be won by other party.
