In Song of Solomon I've found the most beautiful single scene ever. Hagar's funeral. Literally I felt chills running up my arms. The moment when Pilate burst into the church, sudden silence, her shouting "Marcy!". Pure, naked emotions.

Brazilian reader here. I'm about 50 pages away from finishing the reading of Song of Solomon (in its original language) and although very impressed, I'm also curious to see how this will end, cause i've spent the whole book trying to figure out what it wants to tell me and thinking that it will take me yet another reading to really understand all of its layers. Toni Morrison could really write like no one else, and it's quite thrilling. I've watched the first 5 minutes of your video, and can't wait to come back to see the other hour left, so I can learn more about the brilliancy of this woman and her words.

I started Moby Dick today after recently really enjoying The Old Man and the Sea. I thought it made sense to join the hunt for the Leviathan after loving Santiago's game of death with the Marlin, so it's really cool to see more American Literature on the channel. Hoping to broaden out from American fish-based-books soon so Solomon could be my starting point!

I haven’t read Morrison- but I plan on reading Song of Solomon the first chance I get. I would urge you to read Octavia Butler - another fantastic black author who really revolutionised science fiction. Do read Kindred and let us know what you think. The structure of the novel and what it says about the relationship between whites and blacks. It’s a harsh book but like Toni Morrison Butler was writing political fiction with its own very distinct aesthetic quality.

non English native reader here (non religious). read the book in English. The only minus (which is a personal issue with me, I admit) is that I wish someone would have left a note in the foreword/preface on how "Pilate" is pronounced. When I first read the book, I kept saying "pilate" like "pilates (the workout)" not like "(airforce) pilot". Otherwise, the story and the writing is so so lush, I sometimes can't believe one person came up with all of it. This woman knew how to write both a fleshed out female character and a fleshed out male character.

Amen to Carson McCullers and Tennessee Williams. I read the Song of Solomon but the only ones I could find on my non-organized bookshelves were Paradise and A Mercy, may have been a library book. The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida magical realism on steroids.

At the beginning of this year I had never read Morrison. I decided to remedy that and start at the beginning with The Bluest Eye, and since then I’ve been having to restrain myself from devouring her whole catalog. I just finished Song of Solomon yesterday. Morrison had me from the very first page with the dichotomy of birth and death (or is it a dichotomy here?). An incredible work, and as usual your primer has proven to be a great supplemental aid in unpacking and focusing all the thoughts floating around in my head after finishing it. Thanks!

Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation declared all slaves in Confederate states to be free. It didn’t change the status of slaves in Union states, such as Maryland. It was essentially a way to encourage slaves in the Confederacy to drop their tools and head for Union forces. Juneteenth commemorates the day slaves in Texas heard about the Emancipation Proclamation from Union troops occupying Galveston.

I’m interested to hear why you think that Song of Solomon is superior to Beloved! I’ve only read Song of Solomon and Sula myself, but I know you’re a big fan of Harold Bloom, and he liked Song of Solomon while rejecting Beloved from the canon. You seem to agree that Song of Solomon is superior but you also seem to hold Beloved to a higher level than Bloom does. I’m interested in why that is and also what you think of Bloom’s stance.
