I remember riding it when I was a kid in the 80’s at Disney World. Very cool ride. It was a little scary as a kid knowing you were really going under water on an adventure and all the craftsmanship and details of the boats seemed so realistic. I love the movie rides at Disney and Univeral that had that real tangible artistry instead of the modern rides that too often focus on watching screens. Some of the Star Wars attractions today bring that incredible sense of really being transported to a special place with physical props and sets.
@BenLaurence9 ай бұрын
100% agree with you, the modern screen based rides are terrible.. especially when you have to wear the glasses!! Rise of the resistance is definitely the best in recent years but I can’t see Disney ever doing something like this again.. glad you were able to experience it, thanks for watching 😃

It’s both a shame it closed and also a shame it took them so long to bring something in its space. I really wish that they could have built The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh here instead of having it replace the nearby Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, only for Pooh to take the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea location seven years later.
@BenLaurence Жыл бұрын
I agree! So sad to think it just sat there rotting away.. Toad is another sad story I definitely want to do a video on. When Disney gets on a new kick they go all in on it and replace classic’s real quick. Recently it was Star Wars and Frozen but Pooh was the rage in the 90s-early 2000s. We lost some good stuff during that time
@ericdraven71858 ай бұрын
I rode this in the early 70's when I was probably about 4 or 5 years old, it was so magical, still vaguely remember it. I really thought we went under water, remember seeing a little water trickling in from the porthole. My Mom still has a few original pictures from back then of the ride.
@BenLaurence8 ай бұрын
Man I wish people today could experience it! Crazy you had a water leak on your sub 😆
@christalbot2107 ай бұрын
@@BenLaurence You sort of can: there's a VR 360 version of the ride somewhere on the internet. They acquired a lot of old videos of the ride to get the look and feel of it right. It's very well done. Wish I could remember the link (it's been a few years). I don't think they (Disney) would ever do it, but I think it'd be cool if VR versions were created for all of the old rides. I would definitely watch _20,000 Leagues Under the Sea_ , _Mr. Toad's Wild Ride_ (both tracks, please 🙂), _If you had wings_ (traffic cops and flamingos...what's not to like?), _Mission to Mars_ (heck, even the original _Flight to the Moon_ ), and, especially, _Horizons_ from EPCOT (I'd actually like to see both before and after GE sponsorship; it changed the exit of the ride).
@christalbot2107 ай бұрын
Wasn't that cool? Our first time was early '72 (we live a couple of hours away) and I immediately loved it. Went on it every year since. I think (not sure) the sub went through the waterfall at first; I remember water dripping off of the hatch getting people a touch wet when they went in or left the sub (it did help with the illusion that the sub actually went underwater). Not long after that, they split the waterfall so it'd fall on either side, not on top. I was young (a little older than you), so I don't know for sure the sub went through the waterfall, just a belief.

I was too scared as a child to go on the ride when we were there in the mid 1980s. I was too scared of the sub and the squid. In fact, it was hard for me to watch the original movie as a child because of the squid attack scene. My parents were mad at me because I refused to get on the ride at the last minute and had to wait until they got off after their ride was over with. Im not bothered by the movie anymore and I consider it a classic. Im sorry I never rode the ride now. I think Disney should bring back the ride.

@stuffchat7 ай бұрын
Too bad you never actually took the ride. Glad to say I did take it like within about a year before it closed. If I had to be very honest though, you didn't miss much. Of all the rides at the time, it was probably the lamest. Rather let's say it was very dated. Really it was just a bunch of underwater dollies with VERY limited animatronics and the minimum of movement if any (mostly just static stuff made on a far too small scale to be believable, more like somebody had strewn their toys in the lake). The interior of the submarine was NOTHING like the grand decor of the movie, and was just two rows of chairs looking in opposite directions at the windows. The same sharp organ tune based on the theme song played over the speaker at the window over and over and over again, starting somewhere in the middle instead of at the start of the melody, never sounding seamless when it starts repeating. Got irritating after a while. Imo they could have rather played an orchestral music score that fitted the scenes you were looking at. It was really just seeing the ride from outside, thinking it's fun to climb into a half submerged scaled down version of the Nautilus that was probably the appeal (once inside it was disappointing though to find nothing like the movie set inside). Instead of destroying the ride though, they could have updated it and made it cool with modern technology and LCD background displays in the background and whatnot. I would say anyway that I'm glad I did take the ride at least once. At least I'll always have the memories... *sniff*
@BenLaurence7 ай бұрын
I don’t know this was better then anything Disney has done in the past ten years… it was never supposed to be a one to one replica of the sub from the movie 🤣 it’s a ride vehicle.. that’s like being disappointed that the boats in pirates aren’t full scale replicas of the black pearl LOL.. I think an update of the ride would have been good and much needed, maybe it could have lasted longer 🤧
