Hi Ben. Any reason you don’t use the Write-On effect instead? You can animate the width of the stroke (as well as the color or opacity) anywhere along the path with keyframes, which lets you create more calligraphic line widths and smooth transitions. Which keeps it all contained & smart inside one layer, rather than duplicating and masking. Your method only really works when you don’t have a variable-width stroke crossing over itself, but with graffiti art and cursive text you often have to do that. Write-On will smartly draw ‘over’ itself depending on the order you drew the source path.

I like this a lot. I was trying to make one which didnt require any masks, so after doing yours I tried adding a small bulge deformer to each side of the line to get the taper and threw in a turbulent displace to get the variation in width. It worked pretty well - but all inspired by yours.

Instead of using liquify you can duplicate the brick layer, make it black and white and add a displacement map to your spray paint then set the source of the displacement to the new brick layer and adjust the displacement. I'm not sure how it works with different colours you might need it to be black and then pre comp then add colour

Not necessarily depending on what kind of animation you want to make, for example if you're creating transitions similar to this then yeah! However if you're trying to do 2d animation there are limits with these softwares and you'd need something like 2d paint, krita, Adobe animation for more creative control of your animations

it is SO frustrating that you constantly cut when you've clearly done more. I understand you're trying to shoot for brevity but these are literally recommended tutorials for beginners and you skip all of the UI navigation. Feels like watching a teacher show off how good they are at something instead of trying to teach. Huge waste of time trying to follow this, ironically.
