On this episode we fabricate a special jig to suit our louver dies. We modify them to recreate (or) compliment an early ‘Clam Shell’ style louver used in the early 1950s. After polishing the hood and sides of the 'Midnight Special,' we are happy with the result.

Great job with the louvers Jordan! I really like your modification to the shape also! You shouldn't be critical of the appearance after polishing my friend. It all looks like jewelry! Thanks lots for the videos! I really enjoy them all!

Jordan, you're absolutely right about not butting up against the last cut... the concept is related to tolerance stack-up. You're right about marking each of the louver locations and punching to the lines - not the last punch!!!

Tolerance stack up! The exact phrase I was looking for, it definitely shot me in the foot. I don’t care how accurate one can line up the back fence over time it will always happen. All the best a Tom!

There is a range of opinions about to paint or not to paint: Paint everything Paint panels but not louvres Paint nothing You said the car is for sale so you could leave the hood as-is until the new owner has paid the money and then finish to his/her preference. In any case, this was the touch it needed. I think your layout design was right on and class of the whole car was upgraded significantly. Great work. 🥸👍👀✅

Great video. I was scared to death that the polishing wheel was qonna’ catch an opening and send a panel flying across the shop. We both would have lost at least one nights sleep over that. Having the mirrored sides reflect the pipes gives it a dazzling look as well. Bravo!

i think a couple of cheap laser lines set up on the press to aid lining up and spacing also how about ppf film to protect surface then you could do a few stamp and dies that is curved to match curve of panel not to press flats into curved panels all in all a lovely job there

Worked for Sun Electric in the early 70`s as a Tool and Die maker. I’ve made many louver dies. We had a lot of louvers in our testing equipment for cooling purposes. Our louvers had a spring pad in the inner opening so the louver would bottom out resulting in a much crisper louver. We also had die’s to do 5 and 10 louvers at a time.

Nice work on making the jig and modifying the louvre dies Jordan, the result on the bonnet was outstanding I always thought the first bonnet would have looked better painted body colour but like the idea of polished louvres poking though the paint. Keep looking for a mill or a lathe, good older ones pop up from time to time at reasonable prices it took me a few years to find mine but is worth the effort. Good to see your finding uses for the left over leather. cheers Greg

Love it, i wouldn't paint it, as for the blister that you have to make, i'd mirror the shape of the louvers just much larger and leave it polished also and add a small engine turned dash for the 2 gages, this is beautiful now. Playing the lotto, if i win i'd definately make you an offer.
