This is a good comprehensive test. However, personally I'd be checking the frame and engine numbers first, followed by the keys and then the rest of the bike. No point going through the whole bike BEFORE you discover the numbers don't match or the keys have been replaced...

Another good check would be to move the handle bar up and down from side to side, pull up with one hand and push down with the other. This will check the upper yoke bearing for movement. The beautiful GS you have there could have a worn yoke and/or bearing.

Not discussed is what happens next if you find, say, the tires are worn. The average buyer has already decided he wants the bike, so, absent a better specimen elsewhere, he simply asks for a price reduction. And if he finds the bike is perfect, what does he do? Well, he asks for a price reduction.

You're all done are you? May I suggest to people that you might want to check the oil level and the cleanliness of the oil. Make sure it's not milky looking which would indicate coolant leaking into your oil. If you're really keen, take an oil sample and check for metal fibres. Also you may want to check the levels on the coolant and make sure it's clean with no oil in it. Now you're done.

I like to stay away from the used bikes that are conveniently put up for sale right before major service is due and hoping you don't notice the extra $800 to $1800 you'll be coughing up to the dealer in 500 miles. Makes you wonder why they would buy a bike and not ask about service intervals and cost to maintain.

Great video! I'm sure that's a great bike, especially if you can do stuff yourself and don't have to be subjected to Beemer dealers fleecing you at every turn, but my god it's ugly! I know, Dual Sports are hardly lookers any of them but jeez, that thing is ugly as sin. Those Beemer duck-bills are truly horrendous.
@stonodo4 жыл бұрын
Just one more thing...if you have time, check the cleanliness of the air filter, this gives an indication on how well the bike was serviced. Also ask the seller to supply maintenance records if possible. Check service intervals for the bike before viewing and make sure all scheduled maintenance has been performed. Valve checks for example. The gentleman giving this instruction is very good at acting professional and gave some good advice but I find he has missed numerous obvious details.

There are isues that have not been checked which are engine related. 1) hall sensor 2) oil leaks all over the engine and specially from the rear bearing over clutch disc 3) left upper cam tensioner upgrade 4) throttle position sensor carb synch issues 5) if and when the clutch disk was replaced 6) general eye view of the engine for any flaws

Do you ask for dealer service / maintenance records? If this were a high mileage bike would you adjust your assessment procedures in any way? Is it true that the value and demand for a bike drops significantly after it reaches 20,000 miles?
@RobVespa5 ай бұрын
This is important. A lack of records/history is a red flag. It doesn't mean I wouldn't move forward, but it matters. I usually ask for the VIN in advance to do a search prior to seeing a bike. If the seller is reluctant in sharing this, that's also a red flag for me (again, not a deal breaker, as when seeing the bike, it's right there). Consistent proper maintenance is my number one on used bikes. Mileage is much lower down the list. Granted, it's all contextual.

@bennettsbikesocial6 жыл бұрын
You're not picking the whole bike up, just giving support against the stand, but it's something you have to be very careful doing, especially if the bike has a notoriously weak side-stand. Personally, I get someone to pull the bike up onto the side-stand and the front or rear wheel (the opposite to what I'm checking), by holding it on the frame. But again, you have to be careful. John

Great stuff...might add to check all the electrics such as signal lights, brake lights, head lamp(s), horn etc. If the previous owner could not be bothered replacing bulbs, probably skipped some basic maintenance as well. I like the thorough inspection of tires but should have included suspension though a test ride would sort that out.
