One thing I was taught by a ex Police Biker was you never overtake where there is any form of junction on the right. The vehicle you are overtaking can turn across you, or more typically someone can turn left out of the junction and hit you head on. Often people at a junction when turning left only look to the right as they don’t expect someone coming towards them on the wrong side of the road. Don’t be in a rush to put yourself into danger

A no brainer really. Any junction is a no no left or right.

Re group riding, when I flew for Wales air ambulance nearly every bike accident we attended when there’d been a group ride-out was either the leader or the last bike. The leaders often seemed to feel the need to impress their mates by pushing hard and of course they were first to meet a hazard. The tail-enders were often less experienced riders or riders on lower-powered bikes trying to keep up. When I rode in a group, we’d stick to our route and have fairly regular coffee breaks, each rider being encouraged to go at their comfortable pace

I apply the rule of a hiker/walker. Do 50 mins than a 10 min break. or double that and have a 20/30 min break after one and a half hours to 2 hours of riding.

I was taught to think of the clear road ahead in 3 parts. Get the overtake done in the third closest to you. The furthest third is for the oncoming car coming round the bend that you haven't seen yet. The middle third is your safety margin. If there's not enough space for all 3, is the overtake really on?

This is for passing junctions where a vehicle is waiting to emerge and for multi lane roundabouts or sections of road. Watch the front wheel. If its a junction you will see the wheel move or stat still, gives you those split seconds to avoid someone thats not seen you. In multi lane traffic, you will see the front wheel of a car move left and right, so if they are in the wring lane for the exit they want, you will see the wheel change direction and gives you tge split seconds to start avoiding them. Its saved me a few times. My dad was an advanced driving instructor in the army in the 70s and its one if the best tips he gave me. I look to see if i can see a driver then watch the front wheel as i approach a junction, that way i should be seen as i can see the driver but as Ashley Neal says, give way line is a might not give way. As it says in the highway code in general advice, give way if it will help avoid an incident. Not point being right if under a car that didnt see you or give way.

Yeah, I always look for movement on the front wheels. Virtually impossible to make eye contact but usually, as I'm passing a vehicle at a Junction, I move my whole head and give them a good stare just In case they're thinking they can pull out. I generally give drivers a 'thanks wave' too if they give way or don't pull out or turn right in front of me

Having recently passed ROSPA overtaking when there is a junction is a massive no and shouldn't be considered until the junction has been passed . Slow speed manouveres take time to master ... of which I definitely haven't done

Have ridden with others and its been a shambles. The amount of mistakes i make when with others is so high its on the verge of being dangerous. It's because im trying to keep up. Everyone seems to want to do max speed everywhere. Now i only ride solo untill i find a group of folks who want to take a chill pace.

In the last year I have had three different cars put their right indicator on and move partially to the right just as I start the overtake. There has been no car to overtake or right turn to take . I believe this has been done on purpose to put me off or intimidate me. 😡

As you said overtaking on a 125 motorbike is interesting🙏 I don't do it often but it takes a lot of calculation. You've got to drop it down the box and let the engine scream😬

Overtaking whilst approaching a junction, any junction be it on the nearside or offside of the road is not recommended. In the UK we generally have signage of a junction ahead, they are usually some 100 to 150 metres ahead of the junction depending on the speed of the road. However they are for known roads so if its an entry/exit from a private property there will be no warning. If its the same for a field or a country lane or path there will be no signage so we have to be aware at all times of the need to look for any form of junction in which a car or other vehicle can emerge from and not place ourselves in a danger zone and commit to an overtake.

@rcraven1013
@rcraven1013 Ай бұрын
Riding down a white line may be a safe way to practise on a dead road or other safe place. However its not recommended on the road with traffic. White lines are painted with a thick paint and when new they could be some 6 ml. higher than the road surface so they are not flat. Its then like balancing on 4 inch beam for gymnastics. It becomes very difficult and if one practises on such a line there is a temptation to do so in real life between moving cars and on a wet road that beam bar is extra slippery when wet so we can very easily lose control of our steering. A bike does not naturally follow a straight line particularly when going slow. The front wheel will move slightly from side to side therefore and so we must accept that slight weave and work with it so to speak. By slightly increasing our speed that wobble can be nullified or accommodated..

When I do slow speed riding I don't slip the clutch or use revs twice the idling speed. My bike doesn't have a clutch or idle. It's electric. Slow speed riding in a straight line is easy. Slow speed cornering is harder as it's a heavy bike.

I have to say that I am not convinced with regards to the content and comments of this video. If I was scoring out of 5 I would give it a 2 or 3 out of 5. Some bits are ok and some are not ok. It was somewhat simplistic when talking about a serious subject but in very basic terms and diagrams. Statistically one is in the greatest of danger in an overtake as some 1 in 8 riders/pillion passengers die every year on overtakes that go wrong. The best advice I would give is first not to overtake as basically Police Roadcraft tell us not to unless there is a NEED to and we don't have their NEED, so by not overtaking we are keeping ourselves safer. Secondly do not go into a tailgating position at all as this is extremely dangerous and more so if following a vehicle closely and round a bend. If that car brakes we are in serous trouble. So no tailgating means a pulling back to the safer following position and if necessary remaining there. I am sure there is more to come.

Agree with most of your comment ....other than the NEED to overtake ...depends how you define NEED. I find I often NEED to overtake
@rcraven1013
@rcraven1013 Ай бұрын
@@krytenLister Unfortunately many rider do. They also feel the NEED . However Its not actually a NEED its more of as WANT to or a belief they HAVE to or that its a NECESSITY to do so or they feel that they SHOULD. I mentioned NEED because a police officer when they are taught advanced skills when it come to overtaking it was and still is considered to be one of the most dangerous of manoeuvres that can be undertaken. Its fraught with problems and therefore a lot of thought must be exercised before a decision to overtake is taken. Many are not necessary but the words, making progress seem to be the order of the day and that its expected of every advanced rider to at all times make as fast a progress as is possible. Yes in certain circumstances a police officer is so expected but not civilians.; They do not have the same NEEDS. Therein lies the problem. As stats show unfortunately. Over Simplification does not deal thoroughly enough with those matters. Overtakes are so complicated a subject that one could write a whole book about them and still never come to a unified conclusion.
@rcraven1013
@rcraven1013 Ай бұрын
@@krytenListerHe did say in the video about having a NEED to commit to making any overtake . Many riders and drivers fail to recognise the difference between a NEED TO OVERTAKE and having a WANT to or a MUST overtake or a feeling of an obligation to do so to keep up making progress. Safety always overrides everything else and that also means the committing to any overtake and the obvious dangers that is increased by doing so., Some 1 in 8 overtakes that are ill thought out end with a death on our roads so the fewer overtakes we make the fewer deaths and injuries there will be and safer we and all road users will be.
