Hey guys.
So a little different genre, then what I've been normally posting.
So exactly last Friday, October 16th, marks exactly 47 years ago, when the legendary jazz, big band drummer "Gene Krupa" passed away. So I decided to do a drum cover of one of Benny Goodman's signature songs "Sing Sing Sing" that Gene Krupa was most memorable by, as a tribute. I also decided to dress more formally for the video, just to look more like the big band style.
I used to play this song a lot with the Toronto All-Star Big Band as an encore or finale and I had a drum solo feature, which was always very fun, so this song always brings me back great memories.

Gene was my favorite drummer of all time. I had the LP of the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert which I played over and over, endlessly, much to my parent's chagrin. Even in the car today when I play it I can see Gene hitting the skins. That was a wonderful rendition of that classic song. Kudos to you sir.

IF I was a drummer and I was condemned to play only one song for the rest of my life, “Sing, Sing, Sing” would be it. Well played, mate.

The sound of drums, combined with the clarinet - just those two instruments -creates a haunting, exotic mood of the jungle. Primordial feeling. Both Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw used this combination profusely, during the same period in the 1930s, and I'm not sure who stole it from whom. But I think that Artie was the first who developed it into an art form; and when 'Sing Sing Sing' was performed by Benny, it became "melody and beat standard". The emphasis is on the perfection of beat and melody, and it is the golden rule that all dance music (which came from swing), is judged by. I was told by a player who played in Benny Goodman's orchestra, that Benny was precisely counting tempo and beats, sometimes using a stopwatch/metronome, and INSISTED that the tempo and beat are perfect; otherwise, dancers will go off the floor.

this is a song written by Louis Prima.. Originally titled Sing, Bing Sing, as in Sing Bing Crosby.. Louis and Bing were close friends.. Louis wrote this when they were at a race track..telling Bing to Sing out the name of the winning horse to be..

Very clean job. I always felt Gene Krupa's playing was, well, sort of more musical than many others. And every time I hear that recording of the 1938 concert I wish I had been born early enough to have been there. What a night that was. Benny Goodman was nervous that it wouldn't be well received. And now almost a hundred years later, it is STILL well received.
