I’d heard and read about this fight for years. It’s great to watch it. I’d forgotten they’d said that Leonard was a great boxer. He sure proved that.

This is some beautiful boxing shown in the 1920s era because back then you still had fighters who carried the 1800s style of fighting, which was a bunch of slugging and clinching to see who wins. Fighters back then had this style where they would keep both hands down and throw punches sideways, instead of turning the knuckles.

He reminds me of Willy pep. A slower version although still very fast and not quite as good defensively yet still excellent that department yet Leonard was the more technical boxer and he punches alot harder. Imagine those 2 going at it? I'd find it hard to pick a winner. Both for me are in the top ten best ever.I'd have pep slightly ahead but it could easily be the other way around.

They have film of leonard.But none of Greb..go figure.
@gkj1992
@gkj1992 5 жыл бұрын
Hell, there's footage of 4 of Les Darcy's fights, against some men Greb had already beaten or would in the future. Nearly every hall of fame fighter he faced(and mostly defeated) and others who turned down his challenges (Dempsey, Carpentier, Mike O'Dowd, etc etc) were filmed in action. It sucks that we will likely never have film of Greb but we can know how great he was based on his resume against all those filmed fighters.
@gkj1992
@gkj1992 3 жыл бұрын
@Zeno Kyriakides Yes, it has been confirmed that at least Greb-Tunney 1, Greb-Walker, and Greb-Flowers 2 were filmed, and did exist in archives. Upon further investigation by people like Jim Jacobs, they 'disappeared', more likely they were bought or stolen by a collector who knew of their value, or the nitrite film stock had deteriorated to the point of them being unwatchable, or to literal dust, if they were never transfered to 8mm, 16mm film, or even 2" video tape. If they are properly stored, nitrate stock film reels can last decades. Some other fights that may have been filmed were any of his four rematches with Tunney, his third fight with Flowers which was his last fight, one of his fights with Kid Norfolk, or his title winning fight over MW Champ Johnny Wilson. I've no idea what others there could be; they may yet still be out there but are more than likely lost to time. :/

@@constantine7382 Yes, I figured that my response was already wordy but my 'mostly defeated' statement was meant to suggest that Greb beat the majority of his opponents (261 wins in 299 bouts) Mike O'Dowd was the only Champ and Hall of Famer that Greb didn't defeat at least once in his stacked resume, as you mentioned prior He avoided Greb as he came into his true prime.

Duran would have been too much as he was physically stronger; sometimes weighing over 210 pounds, but trained down, i.e., Leonard was not of this kind of build, and Duran had the kind of strength required in the fight game, which cannot be obtained with weightlifting; you have it or you don't! Also, Leonard could've not moved into a middleweight class. He beat Sugar Ray the third time as he also beat Hagler, maybe not by decision, but by facial scars, beat the hell out of them. Voted by Ring Magazine as the fifth greatest fighter in the last 80 years; isn't that enough?

Benny Leonard was certainly one of the all time greats. he was basically unbeatable as a lgt. held the title forever, and was only really defeated when he had to come back into boxing after being retired for a long time, he had lost all the money he made as a result of the stock market crash. Benny in his prime would be at the top of the 135 lb division with all the greats, Armstrong, Duran,Chavez,Whitaker,Mayweather.

christorpher84 Do you actually know what you are looking at? Technique and tactics-wise? Can you slow down the footage and call them out? If not, then you have to get into your local boxing gym and get in the ring...and see how difficult it is to pull off all of those techniques, just versus someone at your level - never mind against an all time great like Tendler.
