I don't think he's supposed to be that much older, most girls dated older guys back then. I got married at 17. My mom was 17, still married 65 years to my dad, they are 7 years difference

My goodness ....good memories. Slow dancing with my Crush back then for the first time. I was in fact sixteen and he was seventeen. We went our separate ways but he's still one of my best friends. We both thought the lyrics in context were a bit creepy but the song in general is amazing. Just not the video 😂

I agree that the casting for the video should've had a younger guy, not Benny. But I read, or seen somewhere that Benny insisted on being THE guy. Being only 1980, I'm not sure where the video would've received a lot of play, but again, I seem to recall that he did receive a lot of back-lash for it - after the fact. I think it's one of the reasons that this song wasn't as big as it should've been. I don't remember seeing it on MTV lol. Regardless, his voice is phenomenal and it's one of my favorite songs, but I can easily pass on the video myself.

Why don’t you Google the story behind the song! It’s got nothing to do with him loving a 16 year old. He took care of 3 kids that’s father left them.

So he claims. But this song is not full of platonic feelings. This song is full of sexual yearning for a 16 year old. He lied about it because he didn't want people to think he was a pedo. But the 70s were rampant with pedo anthems. Check "Hot Child in the City" by Nick Guilder. The kid in THAT one is 14. But Guilder insists it wasn't sexual, even though the lyrics literally describe having sex.

Context: This is what is called a promo video, done pre-MTV (radio star) and just done on the cheap. They probably got the gang-together people they knew to shoot the promo video. It was meant for the music executives to make sense of the song, or if the artist could not show up for, let's say, a live variety show in person back in the day, might play this promo video instead. The song is great if check out the back story of this song it has nothing to do with wanting to be with a 16 year old child but I think the way the song is presented is very misleading.
