Benny Mardones lived in an apartment complex. He had a neighbor who was a struggling set creator on broadway. The family had come upon some tough times and had very little. When the father made it big, rather then help out the family he moved off with a 24 year old girl who was in the shows choir. One day the families 3 little kids came up to his door and began to cry, they told Benny that their Dad had left them. Benny told them that they would get through it. Benny created odd jobs for them throughout his apartment. The young boy would run out and get cigarettes for Benny and keep the change from 20$. The one girl would clean Benny's apartment for 50$ a week. The final daughter, 16 years old, would come over in the morning and let Benny's dog out. The 16 year old girl came in when he was writing the song. She came in after a night of writing and she came in to walk his dog. His partner with whom he was writing the song the song said "Oh wow," regarding how good looking she was for a 16 year old. Benny then said said "She's just 16 years old, just leave her alone." Straight from Benny's mouth. It was a great story.

My grandpha always listen this song since i was 4 or 5yo now i'm 26. And i remember this song. Still love hear this and put this song in my playlist, i don't care some of my friends said ughh you're so old but this masterpiece is my taste. i miss my grandpha he passed away last year. It may be a one hit wonder, but back then, I wore out3 of his cassettes...there were many great songs! You know I’m a huge Bee Gee fan, but I was also a huge Benny Mardones fan! During the Vietnam Nam war, when he was a soldier, he entertained his fellow soldiers with his singing. They called him The Voice! I still love him!😢 RIP, sweet Benny!!

This song hit twice in two seperate decades! It was one of the GREATEST songs of all time, and Tommy Motolla said he had one if the best voices he had ever heard. His voice at the end has been described as "otherworldly!" How true thst statement was, indeed Rest In Peace, Benny!

Interesting facts on wikipedia: Mardones originally released "Into the Night" in June 1980. The song peaked at No. 11 on the Hot 100 for two weeks in September 1980, logging 20 weeks on the chart before falling off in late October. Mardones was unable to duplicate the success of "Into the Night" and is considered a one-hit wonder. In 1989, a "Where Are They Now?" Arizona radio segment spurred L.A. DJ Scott Shannon to add the song to his playlist, ultimately rocketing the song back onto the national charts, on May 6, 1989. It peaked this time at No. 20 in the first week in July, adding 17 weeks to its previous run of 20, to add up to a total of 37 (nonconsecutive) weeks. "Into the Night" was a hit on Adult Contemporary radio this time as well, where it spent 19 weeks and peaked at No. 20. I always loved the song, and still do.

O M.G. Thus was a great song 🎼 Sadly Benny passed away in 2020.from parkinson's disease. His band was known as the Hurricanes. His playlist of songs are on andres duchamp The Best of Benny Mardones. One thing for sure bis that he was totally underated as a singer and performer.

His voice hadn't changed much from 1st release in 1980 to this one in 1989. Loved the song in the 80's. Definitely a strong love ballad. It's on my playlist. RIP Benny 🙏 Gone too soon.

sorry for the double comment, but i saw a couple people mention the creepy stalker vibe. it’s not a song about a relationship with a 16 year old girl. her name was heidi and benny helped out her and her family when her father left them. it’s easier to look it up than for me to type it all out. benny was a true sweetheart. an incredible pain in the butt at times, but he would do anything for his friends. i miss him 😞

I've heard this song before, but I don't remember it being whole bunch of times. I don't know how I never realized how amazing it is until just now. Maybe, I just hadn't heard it enough times to really get into it before. What sold me on it was his powerhouse vocals, especially at he end of it. Great reaction! He actually wrote songs for others like Brenda Lee and Chubby checker. They told him to sing his own songs, so he did, but he caught a lot of flack because of the 1st line, which was bull! Read the story background on the story. His song was dropped off the R & B stations and charts because they found out he was actually white!🤷‍♀️

without the video which most of us heard on the radio we could imagine it was about young love not creepy love and it was truly iconic in that way for us who were enamoured of many rockstars in our late teens. Back in the day instrumental usually overpowered vocals so you often were just carried away by the chorus even if you did not get it right. But there used to be something very spiritual about the way this song hits you because it is about a selfless love he is singing. Unfortunately the carpet video does not stay true to that. Either way it is a powerful love song sung by an incredible musician.
