I've only just come across this. Those three jetpipes in the transom of the boat are the exhausts of three Bristol Siddleley Marine Proteus gas turbines, adapted from the turboprop engines that powered the 'Whispering Giant', the Bristol Britannia airliner. As a young designer, I worked on those engines after they had to adopt the name Rolls-Royce.

From the beginning even the firepump was a 60 bhp Rover gasturbine and the two generators was 90 bhp. These were later changed to two MTU turbines, If I remeber right they were about 250 bhp. Then one of the MTUs was replaced of a normal diesel engine.
@init1003 жыл бұрын
That sounds far too low. The ships are powered by three gas turbines, with each providing around 4500 hp, for a total of around 13500 hp (around 10 MW). Edit: Ah, you were talking about just the generators. Well, I don't know about them.

Only a sonar that is missing, but the noise it makes would be an issue maybe. 🤣 The corvettes that were built after these came with built in sonar and can use towed sonar. Yeah I think they were made primarily to quickly head out from hiding in the large Stockholm archipelago at full speed to launch their anti ship missiles against Russian transport ships or cruisers, destroyers and frigates in the case of a Russian invasion and then head back to a rearm and refueling point. The Bofors cannon was primarily for defense against enemy anti ship missiles and attack fighter jets. Lacked protection against enemy subs though because the turbine noise would've made it difficult to use a sonar even a towed sonar unless they were stationary just sitting there in the water.

Back in the winter of 73/74 HMS Norrköping did 54 knots surfing the waves in force 11-12 winds between the island of Gotland and the main land. When I joined the PTK (sea trial command) back in 1973 and had my first sea duty on HMS Nynäshamn we had force 9 winds and that was not an issue at all for the ship, though a different story for many of the guests onboard. Though the wave height doesn’t get as high in the Baltic Sea as i.e. on the North Sea, they are high enough to sink even large ships. During the sea trials we tested the ships at 46 knots, official number was 40, and we run them from full speed ahead to full stop in a boat length (46 meter), which we could achieve thanks to the KAMEWA drives on the three propellers; you really needed to hold on tight during this maneouver. So yes, they could handle ruff weather as long as you didn’t stop. At a trial with HMS Virgo, all three gas turbines went out when we were idling in the sea and the waves hit the ship aft, and water flushed into the gas turbines. The tension got a little bit high for a moment, as we were drifting towards cliffs, but in the last minute the machine guys managed to get the turbines going, so we could avoid being stranded on the cliffs.

Take a guess. The maximum power output is around 10 MW. A liter (slightly more than a quarter of a US gallon) of diesel fuel contains around 35 MJ. The efficiency is probably around 30%, so the fuel consumption should be around one liter per second, which is also what the crew told me it consumes at its top speed.

These ships were not active anymore in the Swedish Navy at the time, but US could have opted to buy the Swedish Visby class stealth corvettes instead as their littoral or coastal water operations platform.
