Benny Hill was a quiet, private man with a beautiful soul and incredible sense of humor. Like Rodney Dangerfield, he gave the world far more joy than it gave him. Thank you, Benny. May you be resting and laughing in peace.

I read his biography years ago, his cheques from the shows would still be sitting on his mantelpiece weeks later, his agent kept telling him to put them into the bank. He just loved his work and didn’t seemed too bothered about the money.

So so funny and saucy great honour for adults and kids .... today the political do good brigade wouldn’t want this ‘what they call smut’ on the TV. +Brian Michael Richards Round 37 at Fair Oak was Benny Hill's round. I did the adjoining round #42 for 2 years from 1980 when I worked for Unigate. I did about 15 houses at the top of the old Fair Oak Road that were once on his round. One 90 yo lady showed me a photo of her and Benny Hill, one of the national papers did an article on him when he became famous and they visited her house for the story. Only one man at the dairy in Factory Road was left from when Benny Hill worked there but he spoke of what an incredibly funny and top bloke he was.A great comedian, yes dated now but still enjoyable to watch.

@@fulhambob1 not really there are many better comedians benny hill would be in my top 10 but not 5 .definitely prefer other older sketch artists and comedians like the two ronnies or bobby ball.I also like modern comedians like russel howard and romesh ranganathan.Maybe it's just cos the times change and I prefer new comedy and evolving humour or maybe its another reason either way I don't think modern comedy or older comedy is better than one another.

Remember recovering from Hep A in 73 at a Sydney hospital when the nurse noticed I was doubled over laughing while watching Benny in a "top of the pops" skit on the TV; he was playing Roy Orbison. She then told me she was his sister and we became good friends. Sadly she died of breast cancer 10 years later.

It's great to hear original music. This song was recorded in the last 20 minutes of a studio session. Larry Vern was the janitor at the time, and it's his amazing voice that made this song great.

When i was a kid in the 1970's i had this..it was brilliant..the words full of innuendo. I laughed when it said "Ernie didnt want to die he was only 52"..as in tge 1970's an old person was 60 odd years old and 52 was near it. I'm 56 now..haaa..but act about 35 ( lucky i dont look it either)..great times..pity Benny Hill didn't have a longer retirement.

I too am 56 and recall this song being the Christmas No.1 over 1971. All of us at school knew all of the words (and still do I suspect) but even more oddly, the song conjures up the smell of open fires and smoke hanging in the air on a cold winter's morning. Weird how music can whip up such strong memories.

Not long turned 13 when this was released. First heard it about 6:45 on a cold early winter morning, I think December 1971, doing my paper round. I tied a transistor radio to my handle bars listening to Radio 1 before going to school. Great days.
