I think an important step to making realistic shadows is understanding how shadows work. Looking up a diagram of soft penumbra can help. Though it definitely differs depending on the type of light source, the general idea is that the penumbra gets larger as the gap between the object and the shadowed surface gets larger, and so the shadow edge gets less sharp as you go out further. It also helps to think about the inverse square law in lighting, where a close by (idealized) light source will cause a faster fall off of shadow intensity, whereas with a further away light source like the sun this will be more subtle. Then you add in final checks for "should any light be bouncing to here" and "do I need to remove these highlights", etc.

For the spoon, you can use drop shadow and then r-click layer styles> create layer> then it will create new layer and then you can subtly mask out the dark shadows to soft. This way will create accurate shadows in my opinion.

your tutorial videos are great, could you do a tutorial or a tips video on composition, one thing i notice is that in most of your work you build your own backgrounds/settings by chopping up other images. i find it difficult to figure out what kind of images to choose for creating my scenes and how to make them work. i tend to just find an already decent looking background image to add my ideas into.. thanks for all your content. i look forward to your next video

Your technique of painting it is pretty good, but you're missing one crucial thing in your shadows, and this applies to all of your work. Shadows not only change the brightness of the colors, but they also shift in hue. So instead of just turning the shadows darker, the shadow color also shifts in hue as darker as it gets towards the environental hue. If you're only using black/grey shadows the image looks muddy. If you add some color to your shadows it makes it look much more convincing. You should watch some digital painting tutorials to learn more about it, it's a game changer and you'll immediately improve all your art
@benny3993 ай бұрын
Great advice! Should include a TLDR, though.
@crristox3 ай бұрын
I don't quite understand. You mean the closer it gets to the floor it should change HUE? I only knew about shadows being more blueish rather than pure black.
@Sleezy.Design3 ай бұрын
@@crristox You can't generalize that shadows are more blueish. This may be the case outside, because of the scattered (blue) light from the sky, that's why shadows have a blue tint during the day, but that's something different, that's bounce light. In the evening when the sky is orange/purple the shadows might be purple. Im talking about light falloff though. The light itself, as it gets weaker, gradually shifts in hue. Look at a flame for example. The brightest spot is yellow. And the darker it gets, the more it shifts towards orange and then red. This happens to EVERY light. A neon green light shifts towards turquoise, baby blue and blue the further it gets away from the source
@Sleezy.Design3 ай бұрын
@@benny399 I don't really know how to condense this information without it looking like I'm just some random dude who doesn't know what he's talking about lol I wanted to fit in some information so people see that I know a bit of the science behind it 🤣
@Sleezy.Design3 ай бұрын
@@crristox I highly recommend looking up "Lighting Mentor" on KZbin. He has an excellent video on this topic, I think it is "What colors are shadows". The guy used to work as a Disney artist. He's amazing.
