I read a interview featuring Rocco. The scribe asked Rocco if he read music. His answer paraphrasing on my part is no. Asked why? His reply was he just couldn’t read the rhythms. Thanks Ben for this labor of joy and love.

Awesome! I was wondering how much of it you were going to be able to pull off with the left hand "one finger" technique! Any particular reason? Just for fun?
@BennyTheBassman4 жыл бұрын
Well, it’s how Rocco did it!! So the main reason is to try to showcase somewhat of how to play the tune “properly” for those who are interested :) It’s definitely an “inefficient” technique, but it allows you to mute every single note without sacrificing any right-hand facility and it’s absolutely signature to Rocco’s sound and really, to Tower Of Power’s sound in general.

Did you play like 80% of this with just your index finger😶🤯 How do I achieve this type of efficiency of motion
@BennyTheBassman4 жыл бұрын
Yes!! It's how the man himself did it. I mean - it's probably a bit too simple to say "It's just a matter of practice", but that's of course a big part. Other than that I think you really have to love this stuff to want to subject yourself to 1-finger-only playing. Rocco is one of my favourite bassists on the planet so to me it's worth being able to play like him. If I can break out his style on a gig somewhere and have no-one notice or care, that's still great for me. #worth
@froggyleggy4 жыл бұрын
So what exactly is the Prestia left hand muting technique?
@BennyTheBassman4 жыл бұрын
Pretty much all notes are played with the first finger, and the three other fingers rest gently on the string to, say, 80% mute it. Wildly inefficient technique but it creates such a cool muted sound, and allows 100% power in the right hand, where palm-muting does not.
@mikelewis4954 жыл бұрын
Curious about why you were doing most of the fretting with just your first finger. I'm relatively new to the channel so I don't know if this is just the way you do it or if maybe this was a stylistic choice for this particular song
@BennyTheBassman4 жыл бұрын
It was the bassist for Tower Of Power’s signature style. Rocco employed the left-hand mute like this on virtually everything he played with TOP. Had to give it a shot!
