If you're good with a hot-air rework station or even a soldering pencil it should be pretty straightforward to replace that awful backlight LED with a brighter 1206, 0805, or similar. Just be sure to use a bright color like white, blue, pink, or green. I have done this mod on numerous Casios and it works pretty well. I'm curious to see how it will work on the Armitron as I def want one of these (Too bad the black and gold ones more than Double the price)

Great review, as always. I have two Rubiks so here's my 2 cents: Pros: They look good (don't look too close though) and the straps are neat. Price is good as well. Downs: QC is questionable. Also there's no button guards and the buttons really stick out. The snap off case back is also a minus. I got two of these Rubiks and they were both duds, after a month of use, one of them had one button just shoot out of it's socket after being pressed. The other one has the graphics overlay printed askew, can't even look at it, also the buttons squeak. I also have two A1000s and CASIO always have great quality, as you know. CASIO just needs to roll out the A1000 in plain stainless steel, with a black watchface, positive LCD and solid link bracelet (like the Rag and Bone one) and i think that a lot of people would buy that for +/- 200 USD.

Ayy, an Armitron video! Been waiting for someone to make this. They've capitalized with some common sense upgrades over Casio's lazy complacency and I dig it. I have the Ridgemont and I love it TO BITS! It's weirdly reminiscent of a Casio model (even moreso than these) but cheaper and with the same stainless steel upgrade. It shares the engraved/etched caseback, which was a lovely and unexpected surprise when I picked it up last year. The face is a nice dark blue (almost black in some lights) with a vertical brushed pattern. The light on the digital portion (it's ana-digi) is even EL rather than a cheap LED. I threw it on a 20mm jubilee and it's become one of my favorite watches. I've got two nitpicks though. The 12 o'clock marker is slightly crooked, which I can live with. Also, the analog and digital times don't stay synced very long. For the price I paid, I'm still happy, but it's not perfect. I'm tempted to get another as I've banged mine up a bit, so hopefully the 12 o'clock marker is aligned next time!

The Armitron is a much nicer object than the Casio. Feels a lot more solid. The second time zone is a handy feature. The readout is superior on the Casio if you are looking from an angle. The steel Armitron case is a thing of beauty though. Not sure i would agree they are better than the steel Casio a1000 though. That is a beautiful watch and a bit bigger than the Armitron, which would be important to those with bigger wrists.

What about the crystal? At this price, it must be plastic. Mineral would be a nice upgrade. Also, it appears to be countersunk, which should help with avoiding major scratches, although a perfectly flat front in Casios looks more sexy. I'd say that Armitron's dials look as crammed as standard Casio ones (I hate the blue swimmer picture). Tone them down, use better materials - add sapphire crystal, nice leather strap, or a good quality steel bracelet - and you'll have a "luxury vintage digital watch" which Casio fell short of releasing with their A1000. But is there really a huge market for such timepieces?

When you get around to reviewing the Armitron analog models, which all claim to have "Japanese quartz movements," could you please take the caseback off and show us which movement(s) they're using? I can't find info on their movements anywhere on the internet. Are they Hattori? TMI? Miyota? Something else? I'd like to know. Thanks! 😃

I wear my Armitron Griffy day and night and am amazed just how bright and awesome it is. Waterproof too.

The main shortage is acrylic glass. Steel case with plastic glass is nonsense. Water protection would be good to check experimentally by special device. Battery life is not known, which may be ~2 years in case has the mechanism similar to Q&Q M173.

This is what Casio made back in the early 80's. My first Casio was the same spec.

I'm 43 and from the states and often feel like I missed out when watching Casio review/collection videos. While I had one or two Casios growing up, the noise from Timex and Armitron was WAY louder. An Ironman was the king when I was 10 and I still have an Armitron very similar to this.

Looks like Timex is finally getting in on the stainless digital scene at least here in Canada. The T80. Waaay too much at $139 CDN for an acrylic crystal, 30m water resistance, hair puller and no countdown timer. The only thing going for it is the caseback has screws not snap down. Get the Armitron , happy with mine for half as much.

I've had an Armitron LED watch for a while and it just works and does what it says on the tin. No complaints for the price that I paid for it. This is the first time that I've seen an LCD Armitron so I might just take a look. I have an A1000 positive display and don't really have any significant complaints but the price is a lot higher than the watches under review. Many thanks for sharing Ben.

Armitron is found in every single Wal-Mart across the US. Oddly enough my adult son prefers to wear a cheapAF Armitron digital. I asked him why he has no self respect, and why he continues to embarrass himself with that hot garbage on his wrist. He said, "low maintenance, and I can throw it in the garbage when the battery runs out." Can't argue with that logic at all. But, I'd never wear one.

Ben, I’d LOVE for you to try out some of the “Merkur” or “Seizenn” watches from Ali Express. I have the Seizenn dirty dozen WW2 watch and I love it. Great quality for less than $100.

And the case is NOT shiny chrome but a nice brushed finish. That's what i love a LOT. Don't want my wrist watch to sparkle and shine like a bordello door. The Rogue model reminds me a bit of the East German digital watches made by RUHLA. However at this price point they are not really a Casio Killer. More like an alternative for those who don't wanna blow 100-200 quid on a stainless steel Casio modding kit from China. The green side LED really is disappointing. Should have been at least an Amber LED which looks way brighter than the green ones which is crazy since green is a lot easier to see by our eyes. Amber is also so much more eye friendly in the dark.

I've never had an Armitron watch, but I used to hear about them listening to NY Mets baseball games; they were a major sponsor, who billed themselves as "America's watch"... :)

Good review, Ben. I have both of these models, along with a resin Sport Chrono and a vintage digital from 1979. I cannot understand why Armitron did not put the backlight from the Sport Chrono into the Rubik and the Rogue. The backlight on the Sport Chrono is equal to or better than both Indiglo and ElectroLuminescence, at least in my opinion.
