Bent Nib Pen Play

I've been experimenting with Chinese and Japanese bent-nib calligraphy pens, which make very brush-like marks. You can spend a little or a lot, as usual...this one's a VERY inexpensive pen, under $10. It's a Hero, but there are a number of companies that make pens with this configuration. Duke and Sailor are popular choices as well.
And as always, I don't get paid by Hero or anyone else to test drive their products...I just enjoy it!

You can get rid of the scratchiness by writing an infinity sign on an Emory board. Also write diagonal lines from left to right and right to left and side to side and up and down, until it writes smoothly. The Fountain Pen Revolution channel has a good video on smoothing the nib of a fountain pen.

Thank you for the video. I have been interested in trying a bent nib calligraphy fountain pen for a while, but wasn't sure about it's use. My books only define, or mention them, but don't give instructions or examples. Thank you for doing both! I plan to purchase on from Amazon, which offers them in a range of prices. Overall, I have been so impressed by the quality and written product of some inexpensive fountain pens. I have a couple of the Lamy Safari calligraphy fountain pens, and keep one clipped on me so that I have it to use at all times. There is a real difference between writing with a ball point, roller ball, and felt tip pens compared to fountain pens. Writing with calligraphy or plain fountain pens feel more like painting letters than writing them. And so, it feels like simple writing is more artistic than utilitarian. Thanks again!

I found mine on eBay! It's probably best to spend a little more...the $6 ones tend to be a little scratchy. Good luck!

Oooh, no, I haven't tried it that way! Very upright, but not upside down...I'll do it! And of course I don't mind if you use it, that's why I post public videos, to share!

Hi Cathy! Great review on the Hero. Have you tried using the nib upside-down? You can get a fine line that way. Btw, hope you don't mind if I use your video in my blog post about the Hero pen :)

What's the difference between the bent nib compared to the italic nib? I know both can produces wide and thin lines. But do they produce the same result when writing? Same alphabeth form?

The bent nib offers more controllable narrow lines as well, but you have to get used to how to hold it, the correct angle, etc.

An internet search on Hero Bent Nib Calligraphy pens turned up lots of photos of people who own them but I can't anyone who sells them. Can you help me with suggestions where one can buy them? Jet Pens doesn't carry them.

That is not inexpensive for a scratchy bent nib. I have buttery smooth bent nibs that cost half that much, and the three smoothest bent nibs I own, and I mean so smooth they could be any smoother, were included free with ten dollar pens. If a nib is scratchy, it's overpriced. And if you're paying that kind of money for poor nibs, you really, really need to shop around.

Hero is a chinese brand, people see asian writings, if they like it its japanese, if they dont like it it's chinese. Because actaully learning the truth is too much for feable american minds, plus america is based on unfunded bias 😂
