looking at the rust line on the engine block I would say this engine (along with the vehicle it was attached to at the time) was in the water and got flooded out. The valve stems bent when someone tried to start the waterlogged engine.

I think the rings need to come around. Those old nissans are pretty tough. I would just get her back together, get a boat tank, and run it longer to make sure the block is good. I know it's frustrating getting something going after sitting so long, but when it runs, it's so rewarding!

Lapping valves takes a long time by hand with one of those little suction sticks, especially when cutting in brand new valves, there is a trick to doing them quicker with a hand drill. You might not have gone long enough on those two for the condition they were in. Additionally there may have been some grit still in there allowing leak by. Sounded like it was running on all four by the end so seating in the valves should happen the more you run it as well as bringing the rings around. Congrats, you got yourself a cool little truck now and people are watching that seem to like it too. Great video keep up the good work.
@betweenthesharksgarageАй бұрын
i cleaned the grit but maybe not as well as i should have.. you have seen the channel.... i lapped for a long time, until no light was let though ... but you may be right it was my first go, all of that footage just hit the cutting room floor, cause its not exciting to most folks... i was scared of recessing the valves with a drill because i had never even done it by hand.. i appreciate the info
@CommonCentsGarageАй бұрын
@@betweenthesharksgarage Ya I was actually wonder that, it's hard to tell sometimes when you've got to edit the video for content how much of the process doesn't get shown because it makes the video too long/boring. So yea maybe those rings are a little sticky... hopefully that's all it is.
@gregh7457Ай бұрын
@@betweenthesharksgarage I don't blame you being afraid of using a drill. i made the mistake one time of using a coarse grit paste with a drill. I put a huge scratch in the valve seat that took forever to get out. I only use the hand tool now. Its really not that much work

These vids are coming along, man. Thanks for sharing this wholesome awesomeness. When I was back in Aotearoa/NZ recently (COVID refugee), I rescued a Toyota Hilux-a cool little rig and a fun project. The amount of work was similar to what you’re tackling now, though I reckon your's put up a bigger fight! She'll come around man. Now I’ve returned to Australia and broke as hell, so I’m rescuing only what I can get my hands on. Which means JUNK. So far, I’ve brought back to life a ‘76 Land Rover (great vehicle, but wouldn’t recommend), two Yamaha Viragos (honestly, the best bikes I’ve ever worked on), and now going through a ‘58 Vauxhall Victor F Series (the closest thing we have to a Chevy over here). True story you might enjoy: a few years ago, I was renting a place with this tiny, collapsing garage abandoned in the backyard. I used my Honda CRV (just picked an angle and pushed the nose to it and drove slowly in low ratio) to push the structure upright and hold it in place while I replaced the structural timber. Sketchy isn't even close. Then I sorted out the disappeared roof tin. Used found plywood and the cool-looking rusted roof tin I pulled off to line it (insulated even with some pink batts I found on the roadside-fancy af). I also installed a big, awesome window I picked up from a curb. I was an electrician in a former life, so I wired it out really nicely too. It turned out to be a great little workshop-just enough space for a small car and two bikes, vintage tools, a good bench, and an old record player. I should have made that one into a KZbin vid for real.

Please dont give up on it. Nissans are pretty tough, i bought a d21 that was sitting with the head off for who knows how long, got head cut, slapped it on with junk yard timing cover after scouring the rusted bores with scotch brite pads. That thing fired up and ran and i then put 20k miles on it before giving the motor to my friend. (The truck itself was scrap lol) Food for thought. The KA24E head is just about as close to a bolt on upgrade as it gets. I don't know where anyone gets the "non interference motor" bit from on a Z series. The valves can even interfere with each other if the cam is big enough, the stock pistons have valve recesses for a reason!! These engines are probably the epitome of "interference" 😂

Nice job! I'd try a boat gas tank and hook that up to the carb. Get it up to operating temp. Re check the torque on the head bolts when it cools. Then see how bad the carb is for a rebuild. It might be cheaper just to buy a chinesium carb off ebay? Sounds like it is hitting on all 4 to me. Double check your motor mounts, alot of rotation when it hit. I bet the compression comes around.
@clarkmarkey1498Ай бұрын
Gotta love it!! Datsun/Nissan and some Mitsu engines all use that marked links on the timing chain method. Even the pushrod engines use it instead of a simple "line up the marks" system. Some of them you have multiple marks in different colors and turn the engine a number of times to assure the marks line up when and where they are suppose to during a number of cycles. I assume that is because the system is so fraught with uncertainty the engineers had to create a litmus test for timing. I get to work with that era's engineering daily. It's really different than anything in our domestic industry.
@aguywithwood9293Ай бұрын
I'm just playing along and commenting before the end of the video. I'm willing to add to my collection of things I've been wrong about. If it's a non-interference engine and the valves are bent, that may have happened during excessive heat. Additionally, the light shining though doesn't seem to be equal all around. I take that as another sign. @ 5.52 video may deceive, but that looks like a crack in the head. I enjoy your format, knowledge, enthusiasm, and pace.
@betweenthesharksgarageАй бұрын
thanks man good eye... i actually cut it out, becuase the video was feeling long( it will be in the members extended cut). but the light was specifically on the opposite from the mark on the valve... suggesting it was bent from contact....
@aguywithwood9293Ай бұрын
@@betweenthesharksgarage Later you mention witness marks too, indicating contact. The lack of history makes the autopsy a good challenge. My biggest challenge with projects is also not wanting to spend the $700 on a new head. All of mine would benefit from at least a couple seven hundred dollar expenditures, but then what would I do with all the leisure time? Congratulations on the win.
@GearedupukАй бұрын
I would say the head has been skimmed and they didn't readjust the rockers so the valves would have been opening more then they should meaning a non interference engine would be a interference engine
@twoeightythreez13 күн бұрын
These absolutely are interference engines. The Z series is even more prone to this than the L series were. You cant even put in as big a cam as you could in the L series because THE VALVES WILL HIT EACH OTHER. This head was for emissions and low end torque and they were great at thier intended purpose. One good thing about this is these are almost impossible to blow up. The bottom end can handle more rpm then the NAPS head will allow.
