Bentley has long stood for crafting cars that are simply the best in its class. So when time came around for the English automaker to enter the SUV market, it was only natural for them to reach new extremes.
Enter the W12 Bentayga. Like all other Bentley models, Bentayga is built in a north-west town of England where over 4,000 highly skilled individuals craft each and every model. The car was designed and engineered from ground up and was first released to the public in September of 2015. At the time, it was dubbed as the world’s fastest SUV.
With a focus on luxury, effortless performance and everyday usability, Bentayga carries the best of all worlds. In its short life cycle so far, it’s proving to be a popular choice amongst Bentley customers for both versatility and bespoke customisation options.
Under the bonnet is a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine that’ll sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds. It’s got 447 kW (600 BHP) and can deliver 5-90% torque within just 1.1 seconds. On the exterior, Bentayga is distinctive and stands out from a crowd. The model that we drove was finished in a cool, metallic white paint called Ice which contrasts perfectly against the black accents.
The contrast comes at a price though. The model pictured has a $57,593 Black Specification Pack which upgrades the wheels to 22″ in black, changes the exterior trim accents to black, and upgrades the overall look with carbon fibre styling options.
These carbon fibre additions include a new front bar splitter, side underskirts, rear diffuser and rear wing. Whilst it definitely transforms the car, it is a hefty price to pay and aftermarket upgrades such as Mansory are also available elsewhere.
An interior standout is the center mounted Breitling Clock which features a ‘Light Mother of Pearl’ face. The appearance and level of detail within it overall is stunning.
Rear seat entertainment is handled via the optional detachable tablets and headphones. Whilst they do contain a high level of functionality, they do come at a price of $14,915.
Whilst we’re on the interior, around 14 hides of leather go into each and every Bentayga with much of the interior finish, stitching and embroidery work still being done by hand. As an example of the level of care and quality placed, the leather that encases the steering wheel takes up to five hours to hand craft alone.
A luxury looking jewel finish is also visible throughout the interior, along with Piano Black inserts which are also finished by hand. Overall, Bentayga suits a market specific buyer who is interested in the utmost luxury from a SUV without compromising performance or versatility. If the sales figures are anything to go by, it’s proving to be a hit.
Local pricing for the Bentley Bentayga W12 starts at $427,300 or $606,585 on the road as seen here with options. A V8 version is also available. A special thanks to Bentley Sydney for supplying a test drive of the W12 Bentayga pictured within this set. If you’re in the market for a new or used Bentley, get in touch with them.
