DeMille's best work was in silents? I understand his 1956 version of "The Ten Commandments" did pretty well!

There were actually quite a few back then. In addition to Gloria Swanson and Mary Pickford, look up Alice Guy-Blache', Frances Marion, Lois Weber, and Dorothy Arzner, among many others.
