The 37s are a UK success story. A Right First Time design. They're based on the Ivatt EE LMS diesels from 1947. What isn't broke don't fix.

Brian, please indulge my ignorance; it seems that heritage traction was hired in to pull the passenger traffic, together with a variety of EWS power. Was this simply because that was the only loco haulage available, or a marketing exercise to increase ridership? And why loco haulage rather than DMU stock? Was there also a cunning reason for that, or just a shortage of DMUs?

Hi Geoff , Operations manager for Arriva South Wales at the time was the late Tom Clifft who i knew , a loveley man, a big big railway enthusiast himself , he had a big influence on the traction used in the area and, without going into too much detail was responsible for giving us the treat of class 37/47/50 /33 haulage on the Rhymneys and Fishguard harbour services .

Thank you. There have always a been a few, always too few. So few people of real vision these days, too many grey suits and minds...
