Smithkakarot I think this movie was supposed to be the REAL version of the story, notice how the kids who reenacted the time he slayed Grendel, it showed the impersonation of him tearing off Grendel's arm with his bare hands? I think that this movie was trying to be the realistic version of the tale, the story that the poem was based on. :3 That's just what I think, if you analyze the movie it makes sense.

***** You're right, the directors envisioned this as the "true" legend of Beowulf, that he was an unreliable narrator. This is hinted at when he claims he was pulled into the ocean in the jaws of a sea monster, but his memory depicts him being enchanted by a mermaid.

+Greenhorn Films the real version of the story is the actual story. Beowulf tore out the Grendels arm, decaitate Grendel's mother, and killed a dragon with a goddamned Hunting knife. Anything else is a reimagining. Still, ripping a dragon's heart out: very badass.

This film takes a whole host of liberties with the source material, and I think it does an amazing job at it. At its core, the original poem is about a legendary hero who defeats monsters and builds his name, and that’s essentially all it is. What this adaptation does is it portrays a man, gifted with heroic abilities and superhuman qualities, who defeats the monstrous failings of lesser men before him, but who is ultimately flawed and defeated by his own innate failings - not as a man, but as the heroic figure he strives to be. The ‘Beowulf’ we see is heroic not because he surpasses other men and their flaws, but because he fails just like other men and eventually defeats his shame - embodied by the dragon - despite it all. Each hero’s life is inseparably tied to their shame, Hrothgar ends his own life after Grendel’s death and the naming of Beowulf as his successor (successor to both his kingdom and his doom) as he is now free (in a literal sense) of shame, though he did not personally overcome his failings as a hero - remaining a flawed man. Beowulf, however, dies a hero, a god who succumbs to his fatal, mortal flaw - that he is, in actuality, only a man - yet he manages to defeat the symptoms of that flaw: lust for power and, most of all, pride. The man we see on the shore, speaking his final words, is heroic not because he slew monsters, but because he recognised the universal monsters within himself, that inhabit all men, and earned his hero status by defeating them, sacrificing himself in the process of transcending human nature. TLDR: Beowulf is the archetypal Thäd, very based adaptation.

I think the dragon represents Beowulf's vanity, his sin, his failure. Beautiful and golden on the outside but corrupt on the inside. And this is the moment that he owns it, takes responsibility for himself but the price is his own life. Because this sin made his life what it was and to end it, it would mean ending his life as well. Poetic. One cannot exist without the other. Thus king and sin fall together, but at least the cycle was broken with him. That is, as long as Wiglaf doesnt bone Angelina Jolie 😌

The second time he gave himself momentum by pushing himself against the dragon and swinging back like a pendulum. Here's the messed up part, the director wasn't a fan of the poem. He just liked the script. But the script is disloyal to the poem! Grendel isn't Hrothgar's son, Grendel's Mother wouldn't seduce her son's killer and the dragon ain't Beowulf's son. That being said, this is by far the best adaptation of the poem on screen by a mile...so far.

I know I'm 4 years late, but in a way they are their kids. Not in the biological sense, but grendel is hrothgar's sin, while the dragon is Beowulf's sin. I’ve always preferred the movie’s ending to the original. Not because it’s more climatic, but because it feels more true to the character of Beowulf. For example, they point out in the original that Beowulf struggles to use weapons because they tend to brake in his hands. It’s implied that this weakness is part of the reason he chooses to fight Grendel barehanded. As a result, it feels more fitting that he finishes off the dragon with his hand rather than his blade.

Indeed, it is strange from a natural point of view. But the dragon was a demon actually. This heart symbolically represents Beowulf's vanities and sins. He, in a metaphor, destroyed his corrupted heart. That's a movie of fantasy, so symbols are important to comprehend the picture. Nonetheless, you're correct. In the uncensored version it was because the dragon breathed fire onto the bridge. That's why his hand was charred for no apparent reason when he pulled it back out

Wait a minute! In the movie, I think he actually gets his arm burnt when the Dragon breaths fire. Not from a rock falling on his arm, knocking the sword out of his hand. I think they edited/censored this scene for how graphic it really is in the movie. I'm sure of it.

+Ariel Jones actually, it's some burning thing who fall on his hand . Yes, it's was the censored version.

+Spaykers Actually, he burned his hand by the dragon's fire when trying to get to the dragon's heart. Also, DC or not, it's still in there.

I understand that the way they changed the story made fans of the original lore upset, but it made the movie more memorable. If it was just a story of a hero slaying the dragon, people would forget it after 30 minutes, but the story of a hero who fought over his weakness because of old age to fix his faults when he was young made the movie unforgettable.

I think this movie is poetically beautiful. So rich in details and symbolisms. Beowulf in the end destroyed the monster who lived in himself. A story of a man overcoming his shadow. Very inspiring!

What's great about the film is how much it retains the spirit of the original Anglo Saxon poem

He misses the heart with the sword the first time, then he severs his arm to extend his reach, but before his dagger cut the heart, the debris knocked it out of his hand. Then, believing this would be his last attempt to slay his son, he jumped out further then before, using all his might

Beowulf is such an epic character in this movie yet so relatable with his human flaws. If he had survived this feat, he would have told everyone it was two dragons and they were probably Hrothgars sons not his 😂

1:05 where Beowulf wakes up from his years-long trance of playing King to remember he was here for one job and channels his old self one last time. All with no dialogue and the score tells the story.
