I lived in mobile for a while. Right across the canal from austal is the spot where the cruise ship docks downtown for boarding. I used to ride by all the time and look into the open doors of the austal facility and see this thing being built in various stages. It was pretty bad ass. Especially when it got too big for their building with all the scaffolding and such and they pulled it out into the canal for a period to work on it.

Where the ship was dry docked at the end of the video is on the south end of Pinto Island (mouth of Mobile river), in the upper right corner of the screen is the general area where Brookley's runway ends at the water. The beginning of the video is from the Renaissance hotel downtown, you can see the civic center at the bottom of the screen, the state docks is north (left, up river).

Also, A fair chunk of the design work happened using Aussie designers from Australia based out of Henderson as they had the most experience out of Austal divisions in military ships as well as civilian ships (The LCS-2 is based off of a similar shaped car/ferry)

Austal is an Australian company that specializes in the design and construction of aluminium vessels. Its main products include passenger and freight ferries, luxury yachts and military vessels. Austal has three production facilities, one of them on the Australian mainland in Henderson, Western Australia, one in Balamban, Philippines and one in the United States, in Mobile, Alabama. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Yes another great piece of Australian design, engineering and manufacture. Built in Western Australia since around 1995. Travelled with my car loaded on a civilian version back in 1996 from Melbourne to Tasmania. They also build the Australian Navy and Border Force patrol boats. Bet you Americans didn't know that?

Yes, but this was Austal USA. It would be like us taking credit for the MQ-28 Ghost bat buit by Boeing Australia. BAE, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, General dynamics, Boeing, Rheinmetall and many other defense companies have companies in many countries. When our defense companies build weapons in other countries we no longer take credit for those designs because they're built by their designers, engineers and workforce.

Strange to have the music from Hunt for Red October ? - Crazy to think the thing rolls on just a few platforms. My dad built a boat in the back yard - and we rolled it on 5 foot pieces of 3 inch round dowels. The boat road on a wooden cradle. How many years did it take to build the ship ? Amazing feat of engineering.

Amazing that all that weight can be supported without crumpling the small pieces of hull that bear the weight.
@musoangelo5 жыл бұрын
When drydocking a ship there is a thing called a blocking plan which calls out where blocks are to be placed to support the vessel. There are several arraignments so on subsequent drydockings all the hull plating can be inspected/painted.

Austal's massive shipbuilding facility that is building these "Star Wars" ships is located in Mobile, Alabama... I know, I live near it! I have seen the first one of these ships ever built, docked alongside the Austal facility on the Mobile River. Simply freakin' awesome! They are powered by two massive gas turbine engines. Each LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) (Shallow water...) is all aluminum in construction and is built for: 1. SPEED! 2. Able to be operated by a very small crew for the ship's size and 3. To operate in a littoral (shallow) water environment. You have to have a secret or better clearance to board one and you also have to have a "need to know!" Anyway, I saw a documentary on these ships and they are truly futuristic. There is so much automation, top flight I.T. and just shear computing power aboard that it allows the ship to be operated by a much smaller crew than one might expect. Also, like I said each one is VERY, VERY FAST! AND, each ship is powered by impellers not propellers. ie: like gigantic personal watercraft/jetboats etc. They use gas turbine engines to drive massive jet drives for propulsion. SIMPLY FREAKIN' AWESOME!
@MicroAppleStudios10 жыл бұрын
As a Pipefitter of 2 years working at austal, I can say that most of this is correct. The LCS however, its powered by 4 20V 8000 M91-1DS (12205 HP @ 1150 RPM) making a total of about 48820hp.
@RM2Static198612 жыл бұрын

Thanks for posting this video. The LCSs should play an imprtant role in interdicting pirates, terrorists and others using shallow-draft vessels in coastal waters, where large U.S. & other Navy ships were at a disadvantage because of their draft. While many ignorant and silly comments have demonstrated the lack of mental capacity of many people, I am confident that these ships will distinguish themselves admirably once their crews get a chance to do their thing.

nice move by Berard... for those who don't like this LCS ship, it wasn't built to be invincible (as no ship is), it was built to be deployed for purposed missions with interchangeable modules. to say it's a lame, or sitting, duck is simply not true. for the missions this will conduct it is a very capable and adaptable ship with a very small radar image... and not hard to include missiles and CWIS for a more combat/defence role... this ship would likely defeat all other conventional designs of comparable size without even seeing them on the water... so what use is a conventional war ship with a deck gun except for scaring pirates?

@@loftsatsympaticodotc yep, you're exactly right, it's soooo fast it can outrun torpedoes, missiles, shells, and even aircraft. Mr. MacDonald, Naval battles are no longer slug fests at 15 knots. They are missiles launched from over the horizon from a target that may disappear before you know you are under attack. As in all battles, you have to be found before you can be killed. The harder you are to find from a distance, the more chance you have to get close enough to do your own mission. All aluminum hulls rely on defense systems to survive - close range is hard to achieve against them.

It's built by Americans in America (Mobile Alabama), the ship is a design of Australian company Austal. U really get a good look at the hull, n this video. Hving just watched the seesaw effect of a trimaran they might think about extending the out rigger underwater prt up even w/the hull hard angle pnt. This makes it more stable toward the back & helps keep the knife front end n the water. 60/40 not 50/50. U can see it n the video at 4:09 mark.

The trials with the first ship of the class the USS Independence went relatively well. This ship isn't designed to operate out in the open ocean with a battle group. It's meant to get up close to shore and potentially inland along rivers to provide fire support where destroyers and cruisers can't get. This ship can also basically outrun any ship the Russians, North Koreans, and Chinese can throw at them. Don't get me wrong it's not like they can't fire back. That five inch on the bow isn't there for nothing
