I actually tagged you in the Bergera post about the Crest model and how much you would love it, especially when they eventually chamber it in 7 PRC a day or two ago. Some folks actually like a heavier weight model especially when it comes to magnum cartridges so they have the power but a more stable platform for those shots past 300 - 400 yards that can present themselves in the backcountry. Then cut weight elsewhere. To each their own on their preferred style. A Savage 110 Ultralight is a carbon fiber barreled rifle in the same price point as the Ridge Carbon but with a more plastic feeling stock. But weighs a pound less than the Ridge. I can’t wait to see what you share with us from Shot Show. I wish that I could be there instead of working at a boring retail store like Menards

The fluting is a way to add some stiffness of a heavier barrel without all the weight of a heavier barrel. Fluting really doesn’t do much for cooling down a barrel (it adds a little surface area which helps but not significantly). It’s the same principle behind why civil engineers use I-beams instead of a fully filled rectangular beam.

I got a Bergara rifle B14 Hunter in 06 spring 2023 after a very disappointing ejection issue with a Sako 85 in the same caliber. I was told of the stellar accuracy of these guns by a several gun shops where I live in western Canada. Loved the feel, weight and balance of the gun as well as the silky smooth action. However it never lived up to its reputation. Over the course of 3 months or so of trying 12 different factory ammunition in weights of 165, 180 and 190 bullets from Winchester, Hornady, Federal soft point, Federal Premium I could only get one 3 shot group of Hornady 180gr Whitetail to group 1”. The rest ranged from 1.75”-3+” groups. In all the shooting I did with it I would fire one shot set the gun in the shade, walk to the 100 yards and mark the shot walk back, wait a few mins and shoot again. This was done or all 12 brands in 3 shot groups. As I always test from a cold barrel on groups. However not only were the groups disappointing but the action would not cycle any of the ammo. I would put a round in the mag then the second but it tended to pop up. When I did get 4 rounds in and started to cycle the action, ever time it jammed. The first round sometimes go in but the second would always pop up and jam. I filmed all the target shots and I filmed all the attempts I made in loading and cycling the action. I also had 2 new scopes that I put on it just to be sure. I emailed Bergara with the gun serial number but never got an answer back. Luckily the gun shop I bought the rifle from were very honourable and took the gun back and I was able to exchange it for a known reliable gun maker with no cost to me. So I hope that is not the norm with Bergara

Just a quick response to your comment on fluting on the barrel. Going to a thicker contour barrel and then fluting it can give you a barrel of the same weight but increase it's rigidity and cooling properties. If you are not looking to increase weight but wanted to stiffen the barrel and increase cooling, this is how you do it.

@backfire Жыл бұрын
Respectfully, I don't think fluting adds rigidity. How could it? It's removing material. If it were the same barrel contour but without those grooves cut out, it'd be even more rigid.
@garyhawkins8094 Жыл бұрын
@@backfire The "ribs" add rigidity. We used to put these on our field rifles since we would carry them for days on end. Our urban/hostage guns we left them round. So technically you are correct they are not more rigid than a bull at the same diameter of the outer circumference, but they are functionally as stiff as the full barrel but with less weight and better cooling secondary to surface area.
@redrock425 Жыл бұрын
@@backfire It's one of those relative discussions. Is it a thinner barrel with added ribs or a thicker barrel with less mass? I'd say it's a compromise between a thin or thick barrel. Depending on the fluting pattern I think it actually add to the rigidity. You’ve got increased surface area, with radii that conflict with the radius of the barrel, there are a number of factors, but I remember reading somewhere that one of the benefits of fluting is increased rigidity. I’m no physicist though, so idk for sure.
@albertlemont5471 Жыл бұрын
I have argued this before years ago, but I really don't know. My argument was they put flutes in columns to increase rigidity. Why would it not help a rifle barrel?

@@albertlemont5471 that’s funny. Roman pillars are the other primary example that came to mind.

Yeah, the further from the bore axis the material is, the more the material resists bending. It's why we use I-beams to build large buildings and tube framing to build race car cages/chassis. I-beams and tubes are much stronger for the same cross-sectional surface area than just a solid bar of steel.
@anthonykaiser974 Жыл бұрын
Removing material doesn't increase rigidity. What you do have is increased rigidity over the same weight unfluted barrel.
@danielbell4007 Жыл бұрын
@@anthonykaiser974 it’s not just removing material, (depending on the pattern) it’s adding a series convex radii to the barrel which is structurally stronger than a solid cylinder. I’m no engineer, but I know a few and I’m discussing architecture and other non-firearm related topics, radii are added to or built into materials to make them stronger. I don’t know all the answers, but it is interesting to consider. I’ll have to do some more dogging.

if you are familiar with metal you would come to learn that a flat sheet of metal or a round tube becomes much stronger and stiffer if you add feature lines to the metal, you take a door shell of a car and add feature lines in the metal it makes the panel stronger and stiffer, the same thing with a round tube, if you flute a gun barrel you actually add much more tensile strength to the tube itself as opposed to just a round tube, and you also increase the amount of square inches of outer area available for air cooling ,, that is shy companies flute barrels

Fluting allows use of heavier barrel without the weight. Fluting does not have an effect on the stiffness of the barrel.. But going to heavier barrel will prevent stringing of your shots while the barrel heats up, Heating of the barrel generally causes point of impact shift by your 3rd shot. Everyone knows with the light sporter barrel you get two that are close and the third opens up your group !>> Don't worry the Engineers got it right!! Custom rifle builders like Bartlein and Benchmark are using 3B and 4 contour barrels to increase accuracy and decrease POI shift with follow up shots ,,The fluting is to keep weight down! The heavier barrel ( Barrels vibrates like a Tuning Fork ) are stiffer and don't heat up as fast this improves 3 -5 shot groups!

Nice video. I understand that people using suppressors may want shorter barrels but hardly everybody wants them. Longer barrels give you more velocity that most long-range shooters want. I can understand a heavier barrel they heat up less. The fluting reduces the weight and helps the barrel cool as well with more surface area to cool. I do not think that fluting actually reduces rigidness either. I could be wrong, but I don't think so because that larger diameter is what reduces the flex in the barrel. I don't think the flutes take anything away but weight. Thanks for the update and your honest opinion. Personally, I hate skinny barrels.

Best production rifles out there for the money in my opinion. Tikka is a very very close second.

Seekins Havak for is competing in that range for $1900 ish for a carbon stock and a great shooting, made in USA high quality factory rifle. I like my b14r but I also have 2 Seekins and they are a nicer rifle for sure.

Fluting maintains strength with less material as does dimpling asking with better cooling

Seems like that CVA rifle you mentioned at the end is trying to get a stiffer barrel at the same weight. With regard to “stiffness” to resist bending of the barrel, it you take the same mass and distribute it further from the center of the cross section, you get a stiffer “beam” it’s the same concept that is why we use I-beams and box-beams rather than a square rod of the same mass. That being said, with the minimal change in the OD of the barrel, I wonder how much improvement in stiffness you would actually get. Anyone have the barrel profile dimensions?

Just bought the B14 wilderness carbon in 300 win. Hopefully it's as accurate as everybody says it is

Ridge carbon looks nice

I have a Ridge (not this newer model). The only thing I don't really like is the fact there's no rise at the comb. I've had to add a pad to the stock to get my eye alignment up with my scope. Anyone else have this issue with their Ridge? I have the lowest set of rings i can use without the scope touching the barrel. Thought about buying a different stock, but I like the soft feel of the factory stock.

For and elk hunt. Bergara crest 6.5 prc or Springfield armory waypoint 2020. Need help deciding.

Any chance of a B-14 Squared Crest 6.5 PRC review....as I think on paper seems similar to Springfield Waypoint 2020 and the Fierce Rival. Thoughts?

Fluted barrel gives more surface area adds stiffness & cooler Larger diameter = cooler, stiffness, weight.

great rifles but the cost is three times cheaper options without the carbon but still lighter, hiking weight rifles have their place but much cheaper options, very interested in XT depending on price and weight plus build for handling recoil in heavier calibres, hope 7mm PRC and 6,8 options?

@Backfire You ever shot a McWhorter rifle? I hear they're pretty awesome, and for the money, they'd better be.

Fluting of heavier barrels retains stiffness! I'm an engineer, so believe me.

Springfield 2020 Waypoint is cheaper if you get the steel barrel version and you still get a carbon fiber stock

The squared crest doesn’t have an adjustable stock, right? I actually think if prefer the stainless fluted barrel with the HMR stock in carbon, if that’d get it under/around 7 lbs. stainless fluted would have less heat issues

Get Bergara to make you a riffle with the carbon fiber Crest stock and the Carbon fiber wrapped barrel. I mean, come on Bergara... It's a no brainer!

Bought the Bergara 17hmr with the carbon fiber barrel last year and I love it. Only problem though is they aren't supplying extra mags!! Just sucks.

I have a legit question: What would you recommend? Buying a gun like B14 Crest, that has nice lines, good stock, nice barrel and all from factory. Or would you reccomend buying cheaper version of Bergara rifle (like basic hunter or ridge) and buying aftermarket stock like KRG Bravo or any for that matter to make it similar to Crest or HMR in function?

Have you seen or been able to shoot any of the Seekins Precison Havak rifles? Would be interested to know your thoughts and how it compares to the Bergara.

Do you know if the Bergara B-14 Timber is offered in left-handed rifles in the American market? It says the Timber can be left-handed, but l haven't seen it online on gun retailer sites yet.

My Bergara Hunter in 7mm-08 didn't feed reliably and I couldn't find a 140 grain round it liked. Bought a T3x and never looked back. I respect what Bergara is doing but I just think Tikka does it better in a lighter rifle.
