Every year, we celebrate the friendship of NEA Jazz Master Benny Carter and the noted jazz historian/photographer Ed Berger. Their partnership produced award-winning recordings, a major biography, and a wealth of associations that continue to reverberate among their friends, families, and fans to this day.
This year’s concert features one of their personal favorites, cornetist Warren Vache. Vache leads a quintet that includes bassist Steve LaSpina and drummer Steve Johns, who played with Carter’s last band. They are joined by two young talents who bring their own perspective to this classic music: pianist Sean Mason and alto saxophonist Kevin Oliver, Jr.
The event concludes with a conversation between Vache, Hilma (Mrs. Benny) Carter, Ed’ brother Ken Berger, plus jazz historians and close Carter/Berger friends Dan Morgenstern, Vincent Pelote, and Loren Schoenberg.
