That’s what’s so fascinating about 1900s Berlin. A city that saw the rise and fall of 5 separate nations/countries. In a short 80 years it experienced Imperial/Weimar Germany, a rebirth into the third reich, followed by the dramatic rise and violent destruction of a monsterous blood thirsty national identity. Then yet another rebirth as a people divided into two new nations, forced to be at their neighbors throats for half a century. And lastly the painful dissolution of that divide and forced reintegration of their divided people back into yet again a new nation.

You think the survivors right after the war could be bothered to waste resources on ornamented and historicist buildings when said resources were sparse and millions of homeless were in need of housing?

makes me sad that Berlin in 1936 was literally more developed and had higher living standards than Ankara in 2016. 80 years have passed and still we haven't reached this level in transport, infrastructure, city planning, areas for leasure time etc. Even though we invited German architects to design Ankara's important buildings and streets we haven't kept it up as we should have. @@qopiqq3629 they knew the destruction that would happen the world watched the US civil war and everyone learned from it, had it been fought the same way it would have been even worse
@domnoya41303 жыл бұрын
@@qopiqq3629 It has nothing to do with that. The only reason it looks like that is because the government has absolute power. For example no homeless people because they are arrested, large public works funded by the government, no graffiti vandalism due to extremely harsh penalties. What you see is a city created by the government so it is perfect. This is what 100% governmental control looks like because they have the power to create whatever type of city they want. Look at North Korea it has no vandalism the streets are orderly and perfect with massive public monuments. Hitler spent massive amounts on social welfare programs. Massive projects were created just to give people work. Massive changes were made for the city to look like that. For example volks wagon was an idea to bring cars to the average german. Communist moscow would have looked like this as well. The capital city is a symbol of the parties power. Look up certain areas of moscow they have amazingly massive monuments in what looks like a future city. Compare that to New York where everything is privately built which creates chaos. Nobody is killed for vandalism or homelessness. Buildings can look run down and shit because the government is not going to make anything nice it is all up to what the free market wants to spend. Freedom is ugly because people are not perfect like these cities pretend.
