Aww! I don't have that, but I do have a globe I got as a kid, which still has both Germanies, the U.S.S.R., Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia on it. I always used to love watching the Olympics Opening Ceremonies on TV, and I remember the first time I saw Germany--just ONE, Germany--march into the colliseum. I did a sort of...mental doubletake. At first, I just kept watching like normal and then a moment LATER, I was like (gasps) "Oh!" as it actually hit me.

Here's a true story, youngsters. Berlin 1986. A young US Army Lt. gets stationed there as a Train Commander. The Train ran from W. Berlin to W. Germany and back again every night. The Lt.'s main job was to process travel documents face to face with Soviet Officers, so he traveled more and saw less than anyone, anywhere. Boring! Hundreds of documents to get a Soviet stamp and only about 10 minutes to do it every single night! Their studying the details just wasn't practical and since it was their demand it be done, the hero of our story would often slip through unauthorized train passengers. More than once Fred Flintstone and Mickey Mouse made the trip and their USSR stamped flag travel orders got used as a Poker antes, birthday gifts, and just fantastic souvenirs to anyone who had ever had to go through the hassle of getting a legitimate flag order in their name. And one time in Korea at the DMZ.... God, I miss being young, in the army, and the cold war.

Talking about the 50s, my grandfather applied for a job in West Germany in the late 50s and at the interview they asked him: "You've got a job, you've got a home, you've got a family. Why do you want to leave? Why do you want to give up your safety? It'll be almost impossible for you to find a home here." So he (and his family - my family) stayed in East Germany. So why did my grandfather apply fpr the job in the first place? Becaue he wanted to go back to his hometown. His mother and his sister still lived there. But he decided to go back to the East, leaving his mother and sister behind, because he could provide for his own little family in the East and he did not want to risk this in the West. After the fall of the Wall, he found out, that one of his colleagues was a spy (Stasi) and that he got reported for applying for a job in the West.
@cam5816

Damn!!! Do you know how he found out? What would have happened if he had decided to leave??
@espadindelnorte2728
@espadindelnorte2728 10 ай бұрын
@cam5816 Well, he was interrogated by Stasi when he came back. And after Reunification you could (and still can) have a look at the files the Stasi had made about you. So he could see that it was one of his colleagues. What would have happened? Difficult question. At this time it was possible to travel (and move) to West Germany. But the family of his wife could have got in trouble. His mother-in-law and brother-in-law lived in the East too. The regime often punished the whole family. From making your life more difficult to putting pressure on you to work for them for example.

My grandparents lived under Stalin. They experienced his steel grip firsthand, despite not being members of the Party or involved in the government when he was alive. My paternal grandfather was eighteen years old when Stalin died. 32 years later, he experienced the rise of Gorbachev, and it was only then that he realized that life HAS become better thanks to Perestroika, Glasnost, and Demokratiya. Khrushchev's De-Stalinization was able to shake the idea of Stalin being a god, but it was only in 1987 that my grandparents realized that Stalin was no god.

My wife is Chinese. We were watching the Queen's funeral with her niece, who'd come over from China a few months earlier. She was genuinely shocked when discussion went to politics and she found what Stalin was like. Then the conversation went to Mao, with my (former party member) wife nodding along. Fun night.

@@bobs_toys Did she live under Mao?
@bobs_toys
@bobs_toys 7 ай бұрын
@@mikeor- no. She was born shortly after he kicked her bucket. Her parents were teenagers during the great leap forward. Her father was still was a Maoist last I heard. So was my wife when I first met her. It was interesting cracking that. When it cracked, there was a huge emotional outpouring. These still happened to a lesser extent up until quite recently (I pointed out that the govt that forced people to abort children could harvest organs. The one child policy is one of many emotional triggers the CCP taught the Chinese to have)

FWIU the problem with bananas wasn't that the Eastern Bloc couldn't get them, they're grown in Nicaragua and Cuba, but that their supply chains couldn't get them into consumers' hands in time before they spoiled.

4:55 kind of makes you question what humanity could do if they stopped for a moment and questioned anything about the events of the 20th century. Inarguably the worst century in history.
