I travelled by train in Germany in 2014, beautiful country. I went through this station and found it very imposing but breathtaking. I couldn't believe the size of it. I went to Braunschweig and Rostock. One day I want to travel the length and breadth of this lovely country. I come from Scotland.

Grand central is more impressive and stations in tokyi. I've been to both. There's one track down below which heads N/S underground, and the s-bahn and others which head E-W over ground.

I'd argue Grand Central is the best station on classic/old architecture and Hauptbahnhof is the best modern station but the new World Trade Centre station in New York gives this one a run for it's money. I still think Hauptbahnhof take the cake due to the sheer scale of it.

The first time I went there, I had no prior knowledge of how big it was. It truly impressed me by the sheer depth and complexity of it all. Second best station in Germany, only behind Frankfurt a.M. Flughafen Fernbahnhof.

Wow thansk alot for this upload. I was there during new years eve in 2012 and really fun to see some live pictures of it! We lived on this station for a couple of day so or the hotel to the left in the beginning. Amazing city Berlin! : )

No the Hamburger wasnt inventet in Hamburg we Germans sometimes put Burg at the end of city names and i think the Frankfurter was invented in Frankfurt

Thanks, this was educational. Though i find the ubiquitious steel/glass style boring. In future station designs, I would find it less disorienting to not combine a mall with a railway station quite as much. it would be nice to get into something that looks like a railway station. the mall can be a separate wing with another direct entrance.

I rode the s bahn and u bahn so much I became a natural, one time even an English speaker came to me and asked for help. I rode the trains in Berlin, Hamburg, colonge, and Munich. One can easily get away without paying for a ticket, it's kind of like a donation but you might get caught and playing a tourist who doesnt speak English might not go far.

Aha. Auch wenn ich noch nie in Leipzig war, liege ich sicher richtig, dass das NICHT stimmt. Vor Corona nutzten den Berliner HBF 320.000 Reisende täglich, den Leipziger Bahnhof 120.000. Da der Bahnhof in Leipzig ein Kopfbahnhof ist, braucht er natürlich mehr Gleise als ein Durchgangsbahnhof wie der Berliner HBF. Dazu kommt die sicher weltweit einmalige Komplexität des Bauwerkes mit dem Turmbahnhof-Konzept. Wird noch (irgendwann) durch durchgehende U- und S-Bahnlinien in den unteren Geschossen verstärkt.

@@ruhri0411 Berlin ist extrem unübersichtlich. Man kann dort herumirren. Kann in Leipzig nicht passieren. Gerade zum besten Bahnhof Europas gewählt .Mir ist klar das Berlin mehr Reisende hat. Liegt an der Einwohnerzahl.

@@kallenomalle Du hast doch behauptet, dass Berlin gegen Leipzig „Kindergeburtstag“ wäre. Was natürlich totaler Quatsch ist. Ein Kreuzungs-/Turmbahnhof wie Berlin ist natürlich in Potenzen komplexer als eine einfach Aufreihung von Bahnsteigen von 1 bis XY wie in Leipzig. Trotzdem ist es natürlich auch Quatsch, dass dieser Turmbahnhof dadurch unübersichtlich wird. Die Orientierung ist SEHR einfach und die Wege sind auch sicherlich nicht weiter als in Leipzig. Wobei natürlich das Konzept eines Kopfbahnhofs grundsätzlich für Durchreisende äußerst unpraktisch ist. Die Beseitigung und der Umbau von Kopfbahnhöfen ist sehr teuer, wie man derzeit in Stuttgart sieht. Das ist der einzige Grund, warum man an Kopfbahnhöfen festhält, obwohl sie nicht im Ansatz die Leistungsfähigkeit und Effizienz eines Durchgangsbahnhofes erreichen. Deshalb hat man sich natürlich in Berlin nach der Einheit nicht wieder für die Wiederauflage des Systems aus Kopfbahnhöfen entschieden und statt dessen diesen hochgradig leistungsfähigen Turmbahnhof konzipiert.
