Berlin - a constantly changing capital. Berlin has repeatedly reinvented itself - after the destruction of World War II or with challenges like the reunification. Today the modern metropolis welcomes visitors from all over the world.

Thanks DW! There is no place on earth I wish to visit before my time on earth is over, more than Berlin. Growing up in the US in the 50s-60s, our fears of nuclear war were all centered on Berlin, with Presidents Kennedy and Reagan making important speeches in Berlin the city importance was reinforced. I would have loved to share in the joy with the wall coming down. The relief felt by my generation was great.

This video gives a touristy insight. It's a matter of getting to feel the city, whether it's its different chapters in history or its huzzling and bustling present, crazyness and non-conventionalism next to transformations to insipity and traditional local spirit.

Lol. You obviously never been to Berlin. It gives me the feels. History in every corner. Nazism till '45 and communism till '89. Major changes in the political views and systems till the 90s. Now, it's a multicultural city and that makes this city unique and constantly changing. And I can't get enough.

One thing that shows u that Germany is full of old people is the number of museums that they have... In Germany, the infrastructure that u could build without any protest or lawsuit are things that are appealing more to old people like museums and theatres...If a bridge or skyscraper or highway wanted to be built, a whole movement mostly pensioners (they have a lot of time in their hands to protest) would file a lawsuit against such project and cause considerable delay which increase the cost and afterwards, they would scapegoat the financiers or authority for overshooting the targeted cost for the project...

Dear Jentul, the number of Universities, Museums, Theaters, Institutes etc. stems from a time seeral hundred years back when Germany was not a country as such but a patchwork of little duchies, kingdoms etc. . The first German university was founded in 1386. Fostering the arts was a matter of prestige. It showed among other things a lords' education, open-mindednes and his wealth. Till today, fostering the arts is amatter of civic pride, something all academic minded people in Germany take very seriously. Most houses are subsidized and tickets for students are not more expensive than cinema tickets. This attitude is also the reason why we believe that all education, even a higher education up to a PHD should be essentially free and that the possibility to get an education should be a right not a privilige. Today, most cultural institutions make a big effort to put on displays and shows for all ages. The museums and theater matinees are great for kids while other shows are total avantgarde. That way, we can combine tradition with modern ideas and public education. I hope that was helpful to you.

what an odd and twisted view of things you seem to have... I've never considered the huge amount of museums/theaters/operas/culture in general as an indicator for an old/boring society, but rather as an indicator for a sophisticated one... but then it's just my opinion, I guess :D

If one does not know and understand the past, one is bound to repeat it. These museums are the story of humanity, we are not apart from it. A lack of appreciation suggests a shallow existence, without meaning, beauty, grief or joy.
