As long as we still understand that "tea' is an infusion from the (dried) leaves of a shrub called camellia sinensis. And that there are maybe 2 dozen mint species/varieties. I love the continental European, Moroccan, and Japanese variants, and loathe the "spearmint" variant.

Hello friends 🍻 Berlin is a city that should always be visited in summer, when there are so many street festivals, so many cultural events. Then life pulsates on the many streets and squares, the city itself is very green and guests do not have to drive long to find green oases. As I can see, you definitely had a very tasty, delicious stay in Berlin. The Kulturbrauerei is located in the area where I grew up. Kastanienallee, Oderberger Straße, Eberswalde Straße, Schönhauser Allee were my neighbourhood, my grandparents lived down Knaackstraße in Wörther Straße at Kollwitzplatz. The comparison from then to now is of course a huge difference in terms of changes, especially what kind of life takes place there on the streets. For other tips and tricks, just say something. Enjoy your Sunday 😜🤠

@ravanpee1325
@ravanpee1325 Жыл бұрын
@@nomirrors3552 Because Berlin has the lowest school standards and the lowest school performance indexes in Germany overall among the different states (school system is on the state and not the federal level). Also the bureaucratic administration is very bad e.g. the last election for the state house and the federal parliament will be new elected because of massiv problems with the voting process e.g. not enough voting ballots. You have to wait for months to get even your registration done. Also outside the Politics/Media/start-up bubble are not so many well paying jobs in comparison to other industrial regions e.g. Munich. Berlin is poor and you will notice it sooner or later.

@@ravanpee1325 Thank you for the reply! 😊 My situation is that the only place in Germany I want to live *(and for my three kids)* is Berlin. If not Berlin, then I would pick another country. The man about 9:00 said he was "zufrieden" and while there is the "peace" in that word - your translation - I would translate "zufrieden sein" with "be happy with", or "be pleased with", "be satisfied with". As I am not German - I may get corrected. In my native, also Germanic, language, we would say that everything with "zu" before it (e.g. zu viele), is bad, except "zufrieden".
@Henning_Rech
@Henning_Rech Жыл бұрын
"zu" as a part of a word means "towards". "zu" as a separate word before an adjective is like the english "too". There are more meanings of "zu". "zufrieden" is something that leads towards (your mood of) peace.

Gday BFF, lovely to see you guys in Berlin and enjoying the international food truck event. Little Jack has a healthy appetite. Good to see ! Here in Victoria Australia, food truck events are also very popular, happening at monthly markets, agricultural shows etc. my workplace even arranged for a variety of food trucks for our end of year Christmas party. So very much a thing here too especially with Melbourne being very multicultural. These types of events really enhance the tourists experience in a relaxed and outdoor environment, just mingling with the locals. Love it! About the peppermint tea: Traditionally it gets served with a lot of sugar in most northern African and middle eastern countries. Of course you can chose to not have sugar in it, but originally it's meant to have a lot of sugar in it.

At first it seemed weird how in awe of this you are, but then I realized you probably left the US right around when food trucks were rising in popularity (moving beyond the roach coaches selling junk food and coffee). That festival probably attracts a lot of expats who come for food from "home" and to meet other people from their home countries, but it's great to expose people to new foods too.

The food trucks in Berlin have nothing to do with the food truck culture from the states, where the food is not only delicious made by immigrants but also filling (big portions). What you find in Berlin is just overpriced, overhyped hippie cuisine. There are many pretentious things with no essence here, restaurants, clubs, cafés, but at least for most of them you can find decent alternatives, food trucks are not among them, unfortunately.

I always make my own salsa - here's how you do it: Ingredients 400g tomatoes, halved 1 red onion, cut in quarters 1/2 bulb of garlic chillies and/or a bell pepper, depending on your taste - I recommend some jalapeños, habanero and 2-3 dried ancho chillies 1 tblsp sugar 1 tblsp salt juice of two limes 25g fresh coriander or parsley 1 tblsp sherry vinegar 20 ml tequila Preheat an oven to about 180°C Put the halved tomatoes on a backing sheet. Mix the salt and sugar and sprinkle it over the tomatoes. Then add the peppers (apart from the dried chillies), onion and garlic and put the sheet in an oven for about 45 minutes. Let the garlic, onion and peppers get some color, but don't let them burn. Remove if necessary. Meanwhile, lightly toast the dried chillies in a pan and let them soak in a bowl of warm water for about 30 minutes. When the vegetables are cooked, let them cool down. Squeeze the flesh out of the roasted garlic and put it into a blender. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend. If the salsa is too thick, you can add some of the reserved chillie water. It's basically a version of "pico de gallo", although the original doesn't use bell peppers.

The biggest mistake visitors from abroad can do is assuming the rest of Germany would be somehow like Berlin...as it is totally not, even though it is our capitol. In the summer we normaly celebrate the Karneval der Kulturen(carneval of cultures). Where you can meet nearly every culture living in berlin. This year it was canceled, still because of corona. Kulturbrauerei is around the corner where i was living for 12 years. We call the district Prenzlberg(originally Prenzlauer Berg). Konnopke you can also find there (One of the most know places for Currywurst, another would be Curry 36 in the west of Berlin). We don't say west or east berlin anymore. It's just berlin, but you can use the wind direction to descibe the location of a place. There are a lot of nice cafes too. Where you can sit outside and enjoy your coffee. And it's not far away from the Knofel. A restaurant that is specified on garlic dishes.(If you like garlic) Like most berlin natives i left prenzlberg to a neighbor district. I was the last one of my family and friend circle. It's too expensive for living now. You will mostly find tourists and people who changed there from other german states. So it might be rare that you hear berlin dialect there, especially in compare to other districts. As example: the place where "KiK"(clothing discounter, jeans for 10€) was located is now "fast forward". A very expensive shop where jeans start at 100€ .

On a side note the translation is a bit off at 9:06. it's more like "on the one hand we make money and on the other hand we can show to the people: 'what is food?' , 'what does food mean [to us]?' and the marrocan food - 100% marrocan food"

I'm on Team Jonathan with the sugar. With some coffees for example a little bit of sugar is fine to take off some of the bitterness. But I don't want it to taste completely sweet either. If you use a whole packet or cube of sugar that's way too much.

You haven’t really experienced the Berlin foodie scene until you try döner kebab. Its a Turkish dish that’s been mainstreamed in Germany and they’re particularly nuts about it in Berlin! That’s German street food like the hot dog is back in the States.

We have a follow up food video coming in a couple of weeks. Its in post production at the moment, but is essentially a story of "the history of Berlin" as told via food. While in Berlin we did go to a highly rated Döner place, but to be 100% honest it was good, but not our favorite. We are pretty lucky to have a FABULOUS döner kebap vendor in Freiburg that is really, really hard to compete with.

The best mexican food I have found in Berlin is being sold from a stall in a supermarket parking lot far away from the city centre. As great as all this stuff looks, you need to try out some of the traditional Berlin foods, even if it is surprisingly hard to come by in some cases (at least in a good quality).

We have a second Berlin food video that should come out in about 2 weeks. The premise is kind of a "history of Berlin as told via food" so we go through not only the different waves of immigration and how it impacted food, but also the fall of the Berlin wall and a visit to the oldest restaurant in Berlin that is now owned by a former East Berlin family.

@@TypeAshton Great! A lot of the traditional Berlin food is really hard to come by nowadays because it was poor people's stuff. I have been looking for a place that serves Berliner Schnitzel (which is made from cow's udder) for ages, for example.

You actually pronounced „Brauerei“ the exact same way like many people in the area around „Herborn“ would pronounce it. Further „proof“ of my „hypothesis“ that former Hessian soldiers fighting in the revolutionary war and staying there after the war, brought the rolling „r“ to the US. 😉 Just kidding. 😊

The subtitles at 9:15 seems to be weirdly off. "Zufrieden" means satisfied, not to be at peace. Nothing dramatic, but sufficiently different to be noticable imo.

Hi! I don't know if it's worth making an entire video about it, but if you plan to make a language related video: I noticed that many people who speak english as a foreign language try to speak with an british or american accent. On the one hand it sounds a bit weird, but on the other hand they want to speak like native speakers. I'd like to know what you as americans think about that! Personally, I don't see how else I could improve my accent
