A great video. I have got a lot of friends who were close friends of Bowie's as I work in the Arts . I visit Berlin two to three times a year and always on Bowie's birthday ( my dad aged 87 visits once a year with us, he was a prison guard to Rudolph hess and Albert Spear in the 50s at Spandau prison which is another reason why I love the place) we are good friends with Frank who owns the Neues ufer cafe and dine regularly at Bowie's old haunts the paris bar & schwarzes cafe . We also visit the schoss Hotel and brucke Museum on each visit. I wasn't aware that his name is still on the mailbox, that is something that I will check out on my next visit. I was in attendance at bowie's birthday bash at the hansa studios just days before he passed away, but he will live on forever of course x

Good documentary. You look like Iggy. Perhaps you've soaked up a bit too much of that atmosphere. Heh heh heh.

What I find nice is how "nromal" this apartment is. One would expect they would live in a luxurious penthouse overlooking the entire city, but no, quite a reasonable place.

Very superficial, affected video with a few half-truths. Neither Bowie nor Pop deserve that. Iggy Pop did NOT live together with Bowie in his apartment but in a neighboring apartment. And Bowie lived in Berlin from 1976 to 1978. West-Berlin got many subsidies from the West-German government, that's why it was so cheap to live there + the night life was partly great. But for a West-German like me who lived there in the early 80s, the dreadful Berlin wall situation got on one's nerves. And: Berliners are very superficial people, just like people in many regions in the east of Germany. I left West-Berlin in 1984. Maybe the reunification of Germany should have never happened...but East-Germany was bankrupt in 1989...that's why it happened. Another 30 years of more West-German subsidies for the east, will it ever end?? Given that Low was recorded in France, it's unlikely that Bowie would have written the line 'Blue, blue, electric blue' in his bedroom in Berlin.
@lurelurche Жыл бұрын
well yes, he stated this in an interview, he didn't write it while recording in the studio but long before, that's why it's the "berlin trilogy"

If their names were still on the mailbox, the names would have been Jones/Osterberg, not Bowie/Pop. This guy in the video's just making stuff up.

Bowie in Berlin blablabla.

Cool Video. But the magic didn't come from the place itself. It came from inside the heads of the persons who were there at the time making the music. If it were just about the place being magic, Bowie and Pop every person wanting to create a masterpiece would hanging around the front door 24 a day waiting for divine intervention.

I DON'T SEE NO SUBTITLES!! And I'm an ignorant American who only speaks one language. But I read once that Bowie and Iggy lived at this address so I believe I got the gist. I really wanted to see his room that's blue, blue 'lectric blue... This is exactly where the Thin White Duke would have lived in glorious decadence 50 years before. It confuses me that the Thin White Duke was spawned in LA...and that when Bowie arrived at his Berlin destination, the persona had been stripped away.. Every other source says that Bowie lived in Neukölln surrounded by Turkish immigrants. What's up with that?

+romber58 It's fascinating to hear your point of view. I never knew that the West Berliners wanted the wall to stay put.
@romber588 жыл бұрын
+Morag MacGregor We were the bastion of the capitalist world,in the middle of east germany...a trojan horse if you like.Lots of West Germans moved to Berlin coz then they would escape the draft...the punks the artists etc..that is what made West Berlin special and why i stayed here i guess in 1985,Also the situation politically seemed so stable at the time and nobody thought about Berlin...If they did they they confused it with the Iron curtain. The West German government poured bucket loads of subventions(money) into the city . The east Berliners could of course watch our T,V... broadcasted from literally a mile away......I could go on and on but if you think about it who would choose instability over stability...lol...nowadays i think i don,t mind..instability is much more exciting.
@moragmacgregor67928 жыл бұрын
+romber58 *I* confused the Wall with the Iron Curtain…to me they were synonymous. I was a kid in the 60's and that's how the American media portrayed things during the Cold War. I remember news stories about daring escapes to W Berlin. In fact I didn't realize until recently that Berlin was in the middle of East Germany. I am NOT proud of being so uninformed. As to the question of who prefers political and social instability…follow the money. I'm not sure where that leads & I'm not sure I want to know. If the world seems more interesting to you this way, you are CLEARLY a lot younger than I am, God bless you! 😂😂😂. Wish I could recapture your optimism. Please continue to share your insights, I so enjoy hearing your point of view.

+Morag MacGregor Ha,well the clue to MY age is in my name, and my comment about Instability was only to reinforce what I said about no one in West Berlin wanting the wall to go.When I saw the news that night after coming home from work I thought "Damn, the game,s up" lol. Now I realize that it was just one more step in the city,s history ,Berlin in the1920,s. and 30,s...watch the film"Caberet" with Liza Minneli,Berlin In the 40,s...the war and the destruction.Berlin in the 50,s..the rebuilding and not forgetting the Blockade of West Berlin and the famous airlift..Planes landing every 30 seconds at Tempelhof Airport to keep the West Berliners alive with coal for heating and chocolate for the kids and everything else...Then in 1961 the building of the wall which separated families overnight..imagine that in your town happening one evening as you slept. After that things calmed down and the cold war situation seemed like an agreement not to rock the boat,hence the cool times here in the 70,s and 80,s.Then the events of November 89..
@moragmacgregor67928 жыл бұрын
+romber58 I've seen Cabaret a dozen times AND I've read Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories a few times as well…they were the inspiration for Cabaret. I always imagined the Thin White Duke was an inhabitant of pre-war Berlin. I was surprised to learn that Station to Station was recorded before Bowie moved to Berlin. It makes Low & Heroes that much more meaningful to me, thinking Bowie stepped outside his fantasy of Berlin and dug deep into his own reality. That's how I like to think of it, anyway. And I still have a few years on you. Just a few 😉
