The U-Bahn Line U1 is very nice and I love the GI/1E

This is an old video, because some trains retired, and now use new trains for U1.

@@danieltransit7677 I know, but on the Line U1 I saw many old A3 Trains and a GI/1E. I miss A3L71 and A3L82 in service. The HK and IK I saw on the U1.

You should get an award for this one. When I discovered this el it was also at twilight. I got on a tram without knowing where it would end up, but it took me to the terminal where there are not one, but two different antique elevated stations next to a brick carbarn. I was almost moved to tears at this surprise. I then rode the U1 back downtown enjoying the swift travel over gentle curves. I saw hundreds of happy Germans in sidewalk cafes and sitting down to dinner in their homes, all from the brisk, smooth, quiet el train. And these scenes were repeated for what seemed to be the majority of the travel above ground. This was one my most memorable experiences in my entire life of rail fanning. I bitterly regretted not having the time to stick around and try to document what I just described, but your video will help preserve that treasured memory of what a proper el and city could be, not just in artistic renderings, but in real life. There are precious few steel city viaducts for rapid transit in the world, and almost none of them outside Paris, and maybe Chicago that have significant portions where they are welcome members of a flourishing and humane City Scape. Here is living proof of the paradise the human habitat could have been for many millions today. The story of how we permitted ourselves to be herded into miserable, isolated compartments of autos and tacky suburbs should be studied by all serious urban transit enthusiasts.

trainluvr if you desire another experience like this i recommend you to go to Hamburg and ride on the U3 from Baumwall to Landungsbrücken. I had a similar feeling like you described in your comment. It's a short ride but with the recently finished opera house elbphilarmonie and the view on the huge harbor it's even more exciting

Nice job and the Berlin-U Bahn has similarities to the MTA New York City subway is that it's rolling stock is divided into Small Profile (MTA IRT Trains) and Large Profile Trains (MTA BMT J,L,M,N,Q,R T (pre Christie Street connection West End line) W & Z trains IND A,B,C,D,E,F & G trains) which can mean that the MTA can possibly test a Berlin U-Bahn small profile train on the IRT West and East side main lines while a Large Profile Berlin-U Bahn train can be tested on BMT Brighton Broadway lines and via Christie Street Connection 6th ave Line or 8th Ave line via W 4th or 59th street West side Line

I noticed that in this particular video, the u bahn is elevated. Could somebody tell me what percentage of the subway system of Berlin is elevated and which one is underground?
@florianlucs72295 жыл бұрын
I lived my whole life in Berlin, but I can't tell you the exact percentage. The old lines are elevated, probably because they are close to rivers. Berlin is basically build on a swamp. So you get groundwater past 7 to 10 meters. To really confuse people the over ground train (s-bahn) has a section crossing from South to North that is build under ground. So the subway is partially over ground and the opposite is partially under ground.
@gajuTV4 жыл бұрын
Florian Lucs actually the old lines are elevated because the inventor of the berlin sewerage was afraid the ubahn would destroy his system.
@juanfran5793 жыл бұрын
I've just tried to count the underground stations that are outside and built high up. I've counted 12, apart from that some others are outside but at ground level. I've counted 8 of those. It's not really a high percentage.

They are there so that the driver can see if there are people getting on/off the train. When the area is clear, he/she can close the doors.
@AlephInf7 жыл бұрын
Correct. It removes the need for a guard, as the driver can operate the doors. That means faster service and less money spent on pay. It's called driver-only operation or DOO for short.

From a technical viewpoint, a quality product. Crisp definition, clear colors, sharp and with interesting sound including that high pitched traction motor. Some of the Germans looked very uncomfortable being filmed and you seem to have gotten cursed (not that I know German curse words). Did some assume you were part of the police or security services? Question Herr Luftschlange. Are these stations barrier/gate free? It looks that way. You pay for a ticket, put it into validation box and board, right? Multiple-day tourist card needs to be validated and then you are free to travel on everything in A and B zones, without doing anything else, right?
@S404_447 жыл бұрын
John Morrison Probably the passer-bys were just confused because of why somebody was filming the U-Bahn. The only word I heard was "Sorry" from this guy who noticed he accidentally walked into the shot. Yes, all transport networks in Germany work on a barrierfree system. You buy your ticket in advance (or onboard the bus, some trams or rural trains), if necessary validiate in the boxy validator, and show to the conductor if asked to do so. Day tickets or the tourist cards have only to be validated once.
