Poland sure does have an interesting past being so close to Russia & Western Europe. I noted you mentioned people smoking at the start - I was amazed when I traveled by fast train (Frecciarossa) around Northern Italy, how many people were smoking at the end of the station platforms. Often a regional train would stop & some passengers would open the doors & lite up a cigarette. Whereas, when I traveled on AMTRAK (South West Chief) they would often have a "fresh air' or 'smoke stop' to allow passengers to get off the train. I also liked that AMTRAK allows booked baggage. My favorite on the long-distance AMTRAK trains is the Observation (sightseer) car & of course the Traditional Dining. I don't understand why they & ViaRail make everyone line up to board the trains - makes no sense to me! I too couldn't see much difference between 1st & 2nd class on that Polish train - apart from fewer passengers in 1st class.

Smoking is pervasive in Europe. They smoke outside all entrances and exits, and it smells pretty bad. I'm an ex-smoker and so, of course, hate it more than those who never smoked. The term "fresh air breaks" is the best euphemism of all time! I really didn't like those 6 seat compartments. Much prefer airline style seating, which I got on my day trip to Warsaw (upcoming video). The newer PKP bullet trains are much nicer. The staff still don't smile though 😀
