Berlin Woodwinds "Legacy" vs "Revive" - Hear the Difference!

This video was requested a couple of days ago, and since the library also just went on sale I had two good reasons to make it :)
Some thoughts on this comparison:
I used the Kontakt version of Berlin Woodwinds in this video. This is important for two reasons:
1. The SINE port does not include the Legacy version of Berlin Woodwinds, it's only Revive.
2. According to OT some fixes have been made to the SINE version of BWW Revive, so you may or may not hear issues with Revive in this video that are not present in the SINE port of the library. That said, I haven't tried the SINE version yet, so I can't comment on the extent of these fixes or on wether new problems have been introduced.
Another thing worth mentioning is that BWW Revive comes with more instruments, mic positions and articulations than Legacy. I did not demonstrate these differences in this video as I wanted to focus on the differences regarding the out of the box sound of the two versions.
...speaking of out of the box: No external processing has been applied to any of these phrases other than some rough volume matching, as Revive is significantly quieter than Legacy.

Wow, they made revive thicker with some sort of room ambience added. I think I like the Legacy Flute better, but Revive sounds better for the others, especially the English Horn. However, there's a build up in the lower range of the Revive samples that I will EQ to bring it down a bit, or the low mids in the overall piece are going to be a bit crowded. Glad to hear this, thanks for doing the comparison!

The Legacy sounds like soloists where as the revive sounds more as part of an orchestral section. The room tone in revive is much more present.

Wow that is a huge difference! Never thought it’d be that noticeable. I’m guessing they applied external IR from the room in order to blend new and old recordings better, hence the more roomy sound of Revive. It’s a shame you lose much of the definition and the classical tone of the instruments. The clarinet didn’t sound pleasing at all in comparison. The other instruments were not overly thin, but if you wanna write for classic orchestration/John Williams-style, you’d probably be better off with Legacy. Simply as a background layer, I don’t mind the sound of Revive. But for exposed lines it’d sound more realistic with Legacy

Great video, I've never heard a direct comparison of them before. To me, legacy sounds great. Really nice tone and a very realistic sound. For Revive, it seems to me like they recorded it differently in a way that I don't like. The mic positions aren't comparable or something? Regardless, it's a lot worse for me. If someone owns the Kontakt version of BWW, does that mean they own both legacy and revive?

Thank you 🙂 I prefer Legacy too - it is worth mentioning though that Revive has a couple of mic positions (more than Legacy) and can be made to sound less roomy than in this video; I just used the default mic settings for both versions. Anyway, the tone certainly is different and Legacy is the clear winner for me. Yup, the Kontakt versions comes with both Legacy and Revive, the SINE port only has Revive (but now with a new update that is meant to improve the legato performance).

You can adjust the mics to get relatively close to the sound of Legacy, but there are other differences that remain (e.g. number of dynamic layers & quality of the crossfades)

As far as I know the legacy version only comes with the Kontakt version of the library (which is what I used for this video).

@@electedmusic7685 Personally I prefer legacy, which is why I'm glad I have the Kontakt version of the library. That said, I believe they made some improvements to the SINE port of the (revive) library - I've never tried that version though.
