Of course you Love The Divine Miss M. Bette Midler can make you cry one minute and the next thing you know, you're laughing your ass off. She is Absolutely ONE OF A KIND. Thank goodness I have been Lucky enough to have stumbled across The Divine, way back in the '70s. Live At Last was The First and The Best Album I ever bought!

I heard this song a long time ago. I now take care of elderly people... the best way I know how to. Let's not forget about our older people, just listen with your heart. And serve the same way. We owe them that. And, if we live long enough maybe someone will care to listen to us. Keeping us in good company.

I knew this song from hearing it on an early Bette Midler recording. So it was a pleasant surprise to hear this introductory story about the overweight woman with the fried egg on her forehead. It gives a different slant to the song and to Bette's dramatic live performance. Also, I just discovered John Prine wrote this song. All this talent...

Out in the late 70's taking photographs of what I knew would be "Lost San Diego", the downtown areas that are now the spiffy "Gaslight District" and I wandered off...into an old bungalow neighborhood...a very old woman caught my eye so I started taking photos...she had a big paper bag...she was delivering newspapers. I always loved the 'ole wartime remnants of my hometown..but this was different. "Never give up." I would have said, "Hello" but the Lady was busy. I will adore her forever.

John Prine, who wrote the song, gets me right in the heart with this one. He's an amazing songwriter and performer. For me, Bette doesn't do it at all. But for those who she touches with her version, that's great too. The message is the same.

@TheatreFan001 It's a metaphor for being wounded or damaged in some way, of knowing that you don't quite belong or fit in. This song intro - if you get it - is beautifully constructed to take you laughing from the rediculous and absurd to the universal pain we all - not just the elderly - experience of being separate and alone. Having seen this live in a concert version, I can tell you that, for me, Midler is a story teller extroardinaire and has a way of grabbing you and puuling you in.

Is that the famous clown Emette kelly? I remember he started making television appearances back then.
@TheStockwell3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's him. By now, the sad clown is a familiar cliche. But, Emmet Kelley introduced the character, at least in America. He was 78 when this was filmed. He passed away two years later.

That intro told what she was wanted to get across to the audience that everyone has a hurt & some wear it on the inside & some wear it on the outside, she did a beautiful job with it, she was crying too.
