Performed this with Detroit in 2015. I'm just a bass in the choir. Months earlier, when our director said we were doing it with the DSO, there was an audible gasp around the room. I had no idea what everyone was so excited about because I have NEVER HEARD IT before. For whatever reason. Don't judge. So we sit like chess pieces on these tiny wooden bleachers for 75 minutes before we sing a single note. And I'm old, so bathroom breaks are important to me. But you just hold it. And we're packed in like sardines because the choir is 150 people shoe-horned onto a stage holding 100 orchestra musicians. And it's hot. And we can't fidget. The first 8 minutes are OK, but then your back starts to spasm because you're trying to hold perfectly still because there are cameras live-streaming us all over the world. We know how critical KZbin viewers can be. And we want to do well for Detroit. So we sit in pain like nesting dolls waiting for the cue to stand and deliver what we've been rehearsing for 5 months. Let me tell you, it was worth every bit of that agony. And years later when you hear someone say they were at that concert and were in tears, you think back to the hot sardine bleachers and think: I'd do it again in a heartbeat. And Detroit's symphony is amazing.

That's one thing people who haven't performed in concert with many others can understand. When performing a piece like this, you must have stone-like discipline, even though you're experiencing the music more internally and thoroughly than any audience member. The entire orchestra depends on each of its members to create an expression of the composer's vision to the best of their ability.

More epic than Mahler's 8th finale?
@grpcrsh
@grpcrsh 2 жыл бұрын
@@ked4 well to be totally honest I have never heard the 8th performed live. I have never been a huge fan of the 8th. I have heard the Chicago Symphony perform the second on two different occasions the first time with Pierre Boulez, which was pretty good. The second time with arguably the greatest Mahler interpreter, Bernard Haitink. When I heard the performance with Haitink I felt like there was nothing that could ever top that performance. I do plan to one day hopefully sooner than later hear the 8th live.

@@ked4 for me the most epic finale is the 9th... so utterly overwhelming...
@crichardson1893
@crichardson1893 Жыл бұрын
@@ked4 Yes more epic than the eighth lol, but not at face value. 8 is a diagonal line going up, but 2 is a rollercoaster - 8 starts happy and ends happy, 2 starts at a funeral, reminisces on the life of a close friend, questions if life itself is just a pointless game, decides to seek heaven, and is resurrected into eternal life after the biblical apocalypse. It’s the emotional impact that does it for me, and this is a hill I will die on haha

This is my favorite Symphony ever. Performing this symphony was a life changing experience in my musical career. I remember the feeling that came over me when I performed this competition, my emotions were overwhelmed. Being on a stage with a thousand performers performing this Symphony was a dream come true. I am truly thankful to have had this experience. ❤️

I became a Mahlerian over 12 years ago. The order in which I listened to each of his symphonies are as follows: 1. 5th 2. 9th 3. 1st 4. Das Lied 5. 10th 6. 8th 7. 6th 8. 7th 9. 4th 10. 3rd 11. 2nd I only heard the 2nd this year after 12 years. What a wait. I had no idea what I was missing.
