Truly one of the most sublime moments in all opera. I saw Hymel sing this role brilliantly in New York. And although I adore Westbroek in roles like Sieglinde and Minnie, I don’t think she has the seductive French style for this music.

I agree, this is a beautiful version and I like the romantic stage, but in terms of pure singing quality I think that the best performance is the one by Joyce Didonato and Michael Spyres, it's really magic. I think this is the ROH production which I really don't like with the exception of this duet, which is lovely, but that's due to Berlioz and Bryan Hymel, Eva-Maria Westbroek. I much prefer the Met Opera version designed by Francesca Zambello, however, the ballet scene could have been shortened. At least the corps de ballet wasn't hindered and beleaguered by the poppy field setting in Prince Igor, which was hideous. For my money, the standard by which all future productions of Les Troyens should be judged is the 1983 Peter Wexler production with Jessye Norman and Tatiana Troyanos , which IMHO is astounding.

In my opinion this is a good staging among modern versions, specially if one compares it with productions as awful as those by Dimitri Cherniakov or by La Fura dels Baus. But I don't find Wesbroek's performance completely satisfying. There is a new production with the same "mise en scene" and with Joyce Didonato and Brandon Jovanovich in the roles of Dido and Aeneas.
