Although Sondheim wrote what looked like a fun libretto (much of it really is!), "Into the Woods" is really a multi faceted look at human nature. I auditioned with this piece about a week ago and found out I got the part. (Its not a Sondheim work, but its a very good part), that requires the same intensity of "the witch". My inspiration and the character I slid into for the audition was Bernadette Peters interpretation, and its what the producer and director were looking for. Basically in this scene, she has had it with the "you're not good, you're not bad, you're just "nice...." villagers. Its her last curse and my next role :-) .

Trying to kill* the murderer. To protect Jack, who's still just a kid, and because the giant had been destroying homes, the castle too, and killing people like Red's mother. The second giant wasn't without fault and sacrificing a child is not the solution.
@silverjaiden24505 жыл бұрын
Q Raimee he’s an unrepentent kid, that not only didn’t feel bad for what he did, but also planned on killing again. He wants to kill the man that killed his mother, which is ironically the same vengeance that the wife giant seeks, for the murder of her husband.. is her reaction rational? Idk, and probably no one could think rationally in that situation, but again.. it’s his fault
@mkal15325 жыл бұрын
@@silverjaiden2450 And once again, he's a child and the giant was an adult. And he ran away the first time because they had tried to eat him so he of course didn't feel much remorse for the first giant and only went back when his family needed money or provoked by the bet(he is a child). When he said he wanted to kill the man who killed his mother he was being misguided as he was a child who didn't understand the complexities of what he was saying. Wasn't the song "Children Will Listen" about being wary of what you say around children because they internalize it which he did as the giant looks for revenge for her husband. Whether or not you think Jack is in the wrong they had to kill the giant because she had been destroying the kingdom. The death of her husband is not equal to the deaths of he townspeople.

The whole point of this scene is it doesnt matter. Events happen and there are variables in the situation, you can play the blame game all day and go back as far as you want but it'll always be somebody elses fault and the witch isnt playing that game because she's over it. She realizes she's the only one who knows what has to happen and the others won't let it happen without a fight, so she gives up.

she have the tendency to over act when it come to musicals, i would have love her in the theatre production first just to get the feel before translating it to film, a lot of people go see theatre and say they overact or too loud or too much but compare Meryl and Bernadette there's definitely a difference between just yelling/acting big and having nuances in acting big which is necessary if youre performing in a big theatre that require you to project your voice, at the end of the day meryl is an actor and not a musical theatre person, different skill sets that need different training other axamples include but not limted to: dear even hansen, les mis, rent, phantom of the opera,...
@crystalfeline4 жыл бұрын
I know people keep saying that you can’t really compare movies and live musicals, but in my opinion, I guess I just prefer live musicals! Especially Bernadette Peters’ version! The amount of talent you need to have for a musical is INSANE, especially on the level of Bernadette Peters. You have to do this live, which means you have to be able to perform your part on the spot almost perfectly, along with the acting and stage directions. I can’t stress enough how difficult live performances are! Considering that there’s no autotune, no special effects aside from the fog at the end, and no redoing mistakes, Peters’ performance is really impressive compared to Streep’s. And because the actors are only allowed “one take” in a musical, the energy of the room is electrifying. They all only have one chance to show this particular audience this show tonight. And Peters’ stage presence is so impressive! The way she just takes over and demands the audience’s attention makes me have chills! She’s able to project her voice so powerfully and she can control it extremely well. I guess as a musician, I find Peters to be jaw-dropping more than Streep, since musicals are about communicating a story through the music after all. Anyways, idk who would read this, but there’s my praise for Peters LOL
@Hephzibah16 Жыл бұрын
I think I like both equally. But you can tell that Peters has more breath strength. She's needing to be quite active while singing! So, while she may not be quite as powerful, I think she has more power all together. It would be interesting to hear Barbra Streisand do this!

I love the way this is constructed. The baker starts it, in an outburst of emotion he is just looking for somewhere to put his guilt, and attacks Jack. Jack hits back, and the baker is so desperate to place the blame but not recieve it that he spins around and targets the witch. Red and whatshername appear to just be trying to mathematically figure it out, no stake in it, while Jack and the Baker go back and forth. At which point everyone gets a bit confused and Red seems a bit too eager to find fault, then the only somewhat indifferent person (sorry forgot her name) gets targeted, so now even the most passive is on the defence, and it starts to get everyone agitated as theres nowhere relaxed to go, until they bite off more than they can chew, so caught up in their ping-ponging frustration that they target the witch, who doesnt react, not in the way they're needing to keep from dealing with it. She just stands her ground, and they're stuck. She points fingers, but not in a cause and effect way where they're free to keep moving the goal posts, she assertively points out the behaviours they cant deny, acknowledging theyre all guilty no matter who they look to. ""Doesn't matter now." I've been studying emotional maturity and this is a good demonstration of a grounded person calling out impulsive children.

High key; Jack could’ve just cut the stalk and never return, at the very least after the first theft. It was his repeated pillages that manifested the ending with the giant. It is ALL Jack’s fault; and he’s not even a child, he’s like 15 and the default status of minor shouldn’t belittle his crimes OF MURDER. He knew what he was doing, coming back repeatedly to steal, and he knew what he was doing when he got caught. Just because he’s not ‘of age’, which means nothing in this world shouldn’t excuse the fact that Jack’s just an idiot. This point is repeated and solidified; he is just not a smart person; not because of age or experience, he’s just like that and people don’t change that drastically to dismiss it.
@tjopj4 жыл бұрын
@@evelynblackthorn5737 I mean, the whole point of the song (and maybe of the entire musical) is that it's not just one person's fault. It's all a matter of point of view and EVERYONE has their fair share of guilt. That's how life works. Also, just because Jack is played by an adult/teen doesn't mean his character was 15, his age is never specified but it is implied he is a kid. I've always assumed he was like 9 years old. And anyway, both Jack and his mother were very poor, like literally starving kind of poor. The first time he stole from the giant it was to get milky white back. The second time too, but also so that he and his mother could have something to eat. And the third time was because little red dared him to, so his motivations were related to survival and get his best friend back. If anything, we should blame the system that forced Jack and his mother into poverty, cause if the kingdom at least guaranteed they could all eat, Jack wouldn't even need to go up the beanstalk in the first time. Also don't forget that the giant wanted to eat Jack before he even stole anything.

the point of the song: It doesn't matter who is to blame because blaming other people doesn't solve the problem. this comment section: Ok but we all agree that it's this person's fault right?

This is and probably always will be my favorite song from this play. It's just so relatable! Like, why are people so stupid and petty and irrational? All of these people are just trying to find someone to blame for the problem and nobody is offering any solutions. The witch offers a solution! It may not be pretty or nice, It might not be the best solution, but at least she's trying. Everyone else is just complaining and pointing fingers and not being helpful at all. The witch is just tired and frustrated. Her final curse is leaving the people alone to solve their own problems because she's done with their pettiness. She doesn't even care if she gets cursed to be ugly because she lost the beans again. She just wants away from these irrational people. And who can blame her really?

This song is probably one of my favorites from this musical There's just something about it that makes it one of my favorite songs from this musical also listening to it through the perspective of the witch gives the song a whole new meaning and overall it adds to her character and story arch

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like this fictional song from a fairytale musical is inching increasingly closer to being a factual account of life as we know it, especially over the past 4-6 years? Such a gem from the sage that was Sondheim.

I want to try this song, I think it represents my voice well... all but that last note. If I screech I will sound like a dying hyena. I might do No One Else though from the Great Comet, but I am an alto... I mean I can hit all of the notes, but I'm just not sure if I should do that for an audition. Can someone give me advice? Can altos sing soprano songs for auditions?
@fishmarg4 жыл бұрын
transpose it if you can. it's much more important for them to hear your voice at its full potential than trying to squeeze out a high not that's just out of your range. best of luck!

I remember going to see this play off Broadway in the late 80s/early 90s. Bernadette was in the cast, but that day, her understudy must have stepped in. Sick? Who knows. Would have been great to see her. But the other cast, including Dean Butler, just did such an amazing job. The understudy, as well.

I remember watching this in class and I started laughing cus of "LOOK AT WHAT I FOUND👹". When she was gonna try to sacrifice him to the giant
@isabelaa.25293 жыл бұрын
i don’t get why people can’t understand why they couldn’t give jack to the giant. i mean, haven’t u heard of moral dilemmas? if they’d given jack to the giant, they would’ve been purposely killing a child to supposedly save the kingdom (no way to know if the giant would keep their part) and no one wants the death of a kid in their conscience
@isabelaa.25293 жыл бұрын
also to all of you blaming jack on the comments try to listen to the lyrics, all of them had the blame somehow (don’t forget: two of them are kids) and even then it doesn’t matter anymore cause it wouldn’t help to solve the problem
@Lovelyduck103 жыл бұрын
