October 18, 2008. Boxing legend Bernard Hopkins aka “The Executioner” or “The Alien” takes on undefeated hard hitting WBO and WBC Middleweight champion Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik. Going into the fight, Hopkins and Pavlik had records of 48(32)-5-1 and 34(30)-0 respectively. Although Pavlik held two title belts, but no titles were contested in this bout. This is one of Hopkins’ greatest performance of all time, as many observers believe that a 25 year old Pavlik would be too much for the 43 year old Hopkins.
In September 2007, Pavlik takes on hard punching two time conqueror of Hopkins, Jermain Taylor for his WBO and WBC Middleweight straps. Back in 2005, Taylor had pulled an upset victory over Bernard Hopkins which ended Hopkins’ 10 year reign as the Middleweight King of his era. And later on in the same year, Taylor once again defeated Hopkins in a rematch. In a gruelling battle named Fight of the Year 2007 by the Boxing Writers Association of America, Pavlik scored a TKO7 victory over Taylor and in the same year won a rematch via UD.
In June 2006, Hopkins moved up to Light Heavyweight to take on 3-1 betting favorite “The Magic Man” Antonio Tarver as Tarver looks to defend his IBO crown. In a stunning performance, Hopkins dominated Tarver from pillar to post en route to a dominant UD victory. Hopkins was awarded The Ring Magazine World Light Heavyweight title for his win.
In April 2008, Hopkins takes on legendary Welshman Joe Calzaghe aka The Italian Dragon. Hopkins scored an early knockdown, and was able to stop Calzaghe from using his incredible workrate, hand speed and pinpoint accuracy to overwhelm him. However, Calzaghe managed to adapt to Hopkins’ style and outboxed Hopkins for the most part of the second half. Calzaghe won via SD.
In this fight, Hopkins landed punches at will to the body and head of Pavlik, winning every round. Both fighters lost one point each for fouls (not shown in the highlights), but it does little to affect the final scorecards. With this tremendous victory, Hopkins silenced his skeptics.
On December 2016, Hopkins will be fighting his very last fight against 27 year old Joe Smith Jr. aka “The Irish Bomber”, who scored a shocking upset knockout victory over Andrzej Fonfara. Smith Jr’s record now stands at 22(18)-1.
What are you predictions? Will Hopkins once again prove that age is indeed only a number or will The Irish Bomber beat the living legend as he did Fonfara? Let me know in the comments.

Even more impressive is all 3 were the elite fighters of their division when Hopkins beat them. Pavlik had twice beat Jermain Taylor for the middleweight title, and was #7 P4P, Tarver was the number one light heavyweight, and Trinidad was P4P #2 when he and Bernard fought.

@@garibay711cod Kelly Pavlik was TWENTY SIX years old!!! And at 170 nothing about him looked small to me. What about you? Did he look like a smaller fighter? He weighed 170 and probably more when he entered the ring. Bernard on the other hand was FORTY THREE. And Nobody thought size would be an issue for Pavlik coming into the the fight. People like yourself thought that he would do Bernard the way he did the highly unskilled Jermaine Taylor. Question if there had been a perceived size advantage for Pavlik, do you think It would have changed the outcome???????

Hopkins knowledge of the sweet science is amazing. Pavlik liked to be at mid to long range where he could throw his power shots and too many opponents were hesitant to get close and ate his jab and power shots. Bernard realises tht if you got inside his range you had a much better chance. Pavlik was good but he was one of those power punchers who couldn’t deal with being backed up. I know he didn’t win anything or even gamble but I’m just saying In order to win 40k. Because what frauds like this guy don’t realize is for payouts like that, you don’t simply bet on winner. You must choose HOW they will win & round. Sometimes you can bet on WHAT PUNCH 🥊 causes the stoppage! This Kid ain’t risking no $8,000 ~ $10,000 on the off chance that Hopkins (who lost badly to the Welshman little white boy Joe Kalzaghe around this time as well, would somehow beat the THEN-UNDEFEATED KELLY THE GHOST PAVLIK!!!

It's pretty obvious Hopkins learned a few things in his previous fight with Calzaghe... In this next fight with Pavlik you can see Calzaghesque moves from Bernard, the hands by the sides, the taunts, the lead right hand used with great effect (Calzaghe was Southpaw so lead left). And the winding up of shots to misdirect just more powerful and less frequent....... At times it looked like he was doing an impression of him.
@kirklandau2826

Hopkins already had a deep and extensive knowledge and mastery of boxing by this very advanced age. I doubt he learned much if anything from Calzaghe except the limitations of being in a 45 year old body well past its physical prime against a fellow great boxer (Calzaghe) in his absolute prime. Perhaps the loss inspired and reinvigorated Hopkins to a degree to showcase after the fact that anything Calzaghe can do he can do just as well if not better.

Not speculation, just a white boy fantasy. And a typically racist justification for that pathetic fantasy. Call it what it...is.

If Bernard Hopkins would not have been in the same era as Roy Jones Jr. His place in boxing history would be much different.

Hopkins is a good boxer but he uses the opponent's punch and as soon as possible the opponent's arm is needed. This is an unacceptable trajectory in the boxing, as the boxer depends on the blows and the patience and the strength is not the means to get an important position in the boxer in any way and the boxing game (noble art) Deception and deception

Drug problems were starting to show up here as well. Hence why pavlok didnt look that good with the extra mass. He just looked like he'd gained 15 lbs without making it muscle just to make weight against bhop.

+The Sandman The issues were mainly technical rather than physical. I wouldn’t use inoptimal physical shape or drug usage as too much of an excuse. Other greats have dabbled with drugs without immediately having their in-ring performance levels completely destroyed... over extended time it gradually catches up with them however in most cases. Hopkins won here almost entirely because Hopkins was the much better and greater boxer
