Bernard Lewis addresses the Inaugural Conference of the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA). The conference was held between 24 and 26 April 2008. Professor Lewis' speech was entitled, "Studying the Other: Different Ways of Looking at the Middle East and Africa".
Lewis had been a member of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) from 1966 until his disassociation in 2007 because it had become a politicised mess. Lewis and Fouad Ajami created ASMEA as a forum for Middle East Studies shorn of the ideological hold of the disciples of Edward Said.
